Is it possible to lose 8 lbs in one week if you are obese? I ask because someone I know says she lost that much in that amount of time from eating healthy, no exercise. I told her good job, but doctors advise to lose no more than 3 lbs a week or it could affect your health/body. Which someone else jumped in saying that's not true, look at the biggest loser.
So is that possible and healthy and I should shut up?

If a person is very big, yes. Especially at first because a lot of it will be water. 8 pounds off of a 300 pond body is not the same as 8 pounds off of a 120 body.0

Oh OK, I didn't think it was possible. I'm very overweight and haven't been able to lose like that even with eating right and exercising a lot.0 -
Technically its possible, but it would be extremely stupid to do.
A pound has about 3500 calories, so to lose weight (not water) you're talking about a 29,000 calorie deficit.
Maybe an Ultra Marathoner could do it, but anyone else I'd call TOTAL BS on...0 -
Possible yes, initially, especially if the person is big, but much of it will be water weight. Please remember that the people on Biggest Loser are medically supervised and even 'they' do not sustain that kind of weight loss every week. If this is something you are thinking of trying yourself, please don't, it is dangerous and unsustainable. Slow and steady does it. :flowerforyou:0

I'm not the only one who thought she was either lying or being unhealthy. Someone else asked if she was skipping meals/starving herself.
I'm overweight and do cardio at least 50 min a day and eat right and don't see those results. I recently started 100 min walking, 30 min jogging, 50 min of tae bo everyday and don't even see those results lol.0 -

MDs know NOTHING about Nutrition...they are NOT required to take any Nutrition Classes. And YES, it s possible to lose 8 or even 10/12 lbs. in a week. I have a friend who did Fruit for a week and lost 10 lbs....ironically, starving oneself (eating nothing) does not promote wt loss for a short time, but eat melons, grapes, fresh juices and WATCH the weight come off, AND the well-being and clarity of mind, clear skin...are a side result. Also, exercise (routine) is a new fangled word for ACTIVITY; if you walk to the bus stop, up and down stairs, go to the grocery store, drive, clean your house, garden...are Exercise (if you MOVE).0 -

No no no. Lol. I eat healthy and exercise and aim for 2.5- 3 lbs of weight loss a week. This is a friend of mine saying she lost 8 lbs a week and that was hard for me to believe that was true and/or going about it in a healthy way0 -

It's totally possible....you just have to work super hard. I've lost 7 lbs in a week before but that week felt like hell to me; I was eating, sleeping, breathing exercise! And I was ALWAYS hungry and tired...but I did it.0

She says she hasn't exercised. Just eats healthier now.0 -

If its true you're friend probably had at least 5 pounds of poop in her or excess water weight on day one, and was dehydated & had no food in her system on day 7.0 -
First time I joined WW when I was 23, I lost 12 in the first week, doing their quick start diet, I was 200 lbs ( dont think they have that now). Lost 30 in one month once doing 5 drinks a day and no food ( yeah, I was a stupid kid!). Any time I every tried Atkins, I always lost 8 in the first week. Always gained it all right back also!!0

A medical degree still trumps "I had this friend..." Every. Time.
Just because something causes you to lose weight does NOT mean it is good nutrition.0
