Skipping last couple medium runs in training?

I've got my first full marathon coming up here in 10 days. My training hasn't been the best. I followed the Nike plan and it was woefully under-mileaged (peaked at 36). So about 8 weeks ago I started following one of the Higdon plans.

I have run a couple weeks at over 40 miles, and did do the 16, 18, and 20 mile runs.

I was hoping to get my last 12 mile run in on Monday, but feeling really horrible and 95 degree weather curbed it.

Will it be a big deal to just skip it, and run like 8 miles on Friday, or should I try to get that 12 mile run in...will it really make that much of a difference in the Marathon?

  • I'm sure you'll be fine. I'm no expert, but I ran my first marathon last year and have done many other long-distance multisport events and long trail runs up to 50k. Honestly, I don't think I've ever done a 40 mile week. I'm lucky to maybe get in the 30-35 range a few weeks but I do crosstrain a lot with cycling. I've somehow survived all these races up to this point.

I think getting in the long distance runs is probably one of the most important things just to mentally prepare yourself and convince yourself that you can do this, but it would seem that the worst thing you can do at this point is go into the race tired. Think about all the running you have done and I'm pretty sure 4 extra miles will seem very insignificant. I actually skipped a long run today and am putting it off until next week for the same reason, it was just too hot and I didn't want to stress my body with the heat.

Thanks. I think I may try for it on Friday, just as a mental flush. Turn the mind off and go.

Then take it nice and easy next week and focus on diet and being propwely feuled for race day

Less than two weeks before your race, there is nothing you can do to improve you performance, but there is plenty you can do to hurt it.

That being said, I would do what I can to stick to the plan. As you've already missed that run, don't compound the situation by trying to make it up. Continue with your taper as the plan is written.

I figured as much, but through I'd throw it out there.

Thanks! Will continue with the taper. I'm going to get the 12 mile in, but not worry about the 8. Just do the 4-3-2-2 (with rest days obviously) until the race.
