question on hernia symptoms for females

i have heard that it is more difficult to diagnose a hernia in women.
after a big event on saturday, i had some excruciating, stabbing pain in my pelvic area. it went away after a while (maybe 30 minutes to an hour). now there is just a dull ache/throb occasionally and a 'pinching' feeling every now and then. i don't really notice it, but i know it is there if i focus on it. however, i have had to put my hand on my lower stomach and lightly push in when i want to laugh or cough. this morning while brushing my teeth, i gagged a little bit. i didn't have my hand on my lower stomach and almost passed out. also, my husband noticed i have been walking sort of hunched over because it hurts to straighten up. when i lay down on my back, the pain goes completely away. there is no 'bulge' that men are told to look for.
if you are a female who has had a hernia, i would like to hear your story. what were your symptoms, how long did it take to get a diagnosis, how did your doctor treat you, are you happy with the outcome, etc?
for those who's advice is going to be to go to the doctor, i plan on it. i would just like to be armed with some knowledge. oh and sorry if this is in the wrong forum. i debated putting it in 'exercise and fitness'. thanks for any help.
**i posted this yesterday but got no response. i am posting this again so maybe a different group of people might see it, and i hopefully get some response. sorry for the duplicate.
