Anyone do Muay Thai?

Hi there,

I used to train a few years back and loved it but since having a baby by C section I didnt think it was a good idea to jump straight back into it. Fast forward 9 months and 35lbs of fat gone and I have started back at my old club.

First class back was a killer!! 90 mins and by the end I felt so sick I cant believe I didnt actually throw up!! I have realised I need to work on my fitness massively! When I did it before I was in the best shape of my life, 10stone and a comfortable size 10/12 and I want to get back to that :)

Anyway I just wanted to see if there were any other people doing Muay Thai for fitness or even budding fighters? How long have you been training and where do you train?

Claire

Not even close, really, but Les Mills BodyCombat does have a Muay Thai track (5 to 8 minutes typically). I couldn't tell you how authentic it is but it's really intense and really fun!!

    Hi Claire,

Huge congrats on the 35lb loss - that's an incredible achievement!

I started doing Muay Thai training a month ago in Oxford. I'm doing 3 sessions a week of an hour and 15 mins in length each and before each class doing a 20 minute run as a warm up.

I agree it's an absolute killer workout! I've been a Turbo Jam and Turbo Fire devotee for a long time now but the fatigue and exhilaration I feel after Muay Thai is incomparable to any other exercise I've done.

I'd love to hear about your experience of Muay Thai. I'm working towards a fight in an interclub competition at the beginning of December and would particularly welcome any advice for psychological preparation before a fight (bit scared, see!).

Thanks so much for putting out the call to other Muay Thai-ers on MFP - it'll be great to meet more people on the same path and to be able to share our experiences.

    Much obliged!

    Hi Kell2116,

Thanks for the reply! Great to hear from you. Muay Thai 3 times a week? Thats hardcore :-) I have done Insanity at home before but I totally agree with you, nothing can make you feel like a Muay Thai class can! Its the best exercise I have ever done and I am looking forward to a few months down the line when my fitness is even better.

My cardio is lacking at the moment so I am trying to get out for a run at least 2-3 times a week.

I started Muay Thai in 2006 and did it for a year and got down to my lowest adult weight. I felt awesome but then buying a house with my brother and work got in the way and I stopped going (still went to the gym 3 times a week but its no comparison) after a few years break, getting married, moving house and a baby I am back! and Im not going anywhere!

I do a ladies class which is 90 mins and its fantastic. I am trained by Ruth Ashdown. I go once a week on a Thursday but am hoping to go at least twice a week.

Hats off to you for training for a fight. I dont think I would want to do that but as I improve I definitely want to do some proper sparring.

What are your fitness goals? I still have about 2 stone to lose and I really want to boost my tone and fitness.

Thanks again for replying and adding me as a friend, great to hear from fellow thai boxers!
