Will walking tone thighs at all?

I have started walking on the treadmill doing 3.5mph. Average heart rate being 150 (for a 27 year old) for 30-45 minutes. I have 20 poounds to lose and I hold all my weight from the hips down and want to know...will walking at this pace tone my thighs and hamstrings at all? If not at all...does running even do that?

If none of the above...squats? Anything else?? Help!

You can not spot reduce. Just keep losing weight at a reasonable pace ( .5 - 1 pound a week ) and you'll eventually start seeing results in your thighs.

Walking and doing squats are both highly recommended. As the saying goes, lose weight to look good in clothes. Exercise to look good naked.

I noticed the biggest difference in my thighs after I picked up running (2-3 miles 3x a week) and started doing squats every other day. I've noticed an increase in tone and my small patches of cellulite have pretty much disappeared. You can't spot reduce, but this has done wonders for me!

    Long strides are best.
On the street / trail is better than on a treadmill. (much better workout).

    Or do pilates.
  • Reducing body fat will help to make your thighs and hammies look more "toned". Exercise but more importantly ensure you are eating at a reasonable, not extreme, caloric deficit and you will see results. Also look at incorporating some strength training.

I, too, carry all of my weight in my butt, hips, thighs. I really started to notice a difference (a reduction in cellulite at first) when I started running (actually running...it took awhile to build up to running), adding some time on the arc-trainer, and then incorporating squats and the leg press machine.

Just from walking/jogging, my things started to get smaller, but not firmer. The arc-trainer helped with some of the cellulite on the back, and the weighted squats and leg press have helped develop the muscles. I can actually see the muscles in my legs now.
