I recently decided to start a lifestyle change and to get in the best shape of my life and too maintain it. I am 23 years old, 5ft 10 currently weigh 230 lbs, but wont for long. When I was in HS i was in moderate shape, was always fairly slim, but since then I have gradually gained weight, seems I gain more and more every year so I have decided to put a stop to it and change my life. My goal is to eventually get around 180 lbs and build some lean muscle. I dont want to get real bulky just want to slim down and get some defined muscles, and to feel better. I am new at this, never done any kind of diet, exercise program or anything of that nature. I joined a gym this past week and got a weight training and cardio program set up through a trainer there. I plan on working out 5 days a week alternating days between cardio and weight training, cutting my calorie intake, avoiding high fat foods, and drinking more water.

Do you guys think that I will be successful if I follow this routine? I don't really think I can stick to any kind of crazy or special diet, for one I dont have the money to be buying a lot of special food, and I like food that taste good. I can certainly reduce my calories though. I know one problem of mine over the years has been sodas, I have cut it down to one can a day and the rest is water or flavored water. So hopefully that will help a lot. I have never really worked out at all so I am hoping that going to the gym so much will have a very positive impact on my body and health.

Any advice for me? tips? comments? criticism? Any types of food I should avoid or types of food I should eat more of? How many calories a day should I try to aim for?

Any one who wants to become friend and help me and support me along the way would be nice ill offer encouragement in return.

I am excited to change my life, there is a long hiking trail that leads to a nice summit view near my house. Its a very strenuous hike and I am determined to be able to make it to the top with ease by next spring.
