Hey everyone!! I have a question about.. You guessed it! Weight training. I am (sadly) at 338.8lbs and I know that as much as I hate it, weight training is an important factor in weight loss. So Being a complete noobie at this, with no idea what to do. What would you suggest I do? I don't want to bulk up really but I have heard that you burn more fat/calories when you have more muscle. If that is even true. Help?!

Yes it's VERY true! I'm proof! I'm 41 yrs old and eat 2000 cals most days because of weight training! And I used to be obese as a kid so it's certainly not genetics! I'm sending a FR now :)

From my understanding; the more muscle mass you develop, the higher your basal metabolic rate will be [which is how many kcals your body uses without added exercise - all the energy your body needs to function]. So weight training is very beneficial in that aspect.
-You also don't have to worry about bulking at this point, I'm yet to see a woman who does weight training and looks like a tank without added enhancements.
-In terms of launching into it, it's what you feel comfortable doing. Some people prefer pin loaded and some people prefer free weights. Try a bit of everything and take it from there. Never forget to train your legs too!

I'm convinced that it's the best way to get a better body and not just a smaller body. It reshapes and firms up your body. And you will not get bulky. And the added bonus is that you can EAT more.

^I agree full-heartedly. Tis the reason why I weight train too.

You're not going to bulk up if you're eating at a caloric deficit, which you should be. That said, resistance training will be a great compliment to your current regimen. There is a plethora of information in these forums that will help you. Use the search button and review some threads on this same topic. Good luck!

Weight training is possibly one of the best things you can do for your body! Excellent for losing body fat, increasing your metabolism, and just overall feeling like a bada$$! I would recommend you hop on over to Nia Shanks' site called "Lift Like A Girl." She has many programs, but I would suggest you checking out her "Beautiful Badass" program. Simple, to the point, and especially for a newb not too technical (as in, it's essentially a bare bones program....no fancy moves or anything). Good luck! You got this!

Also wanted to throw in there, have you ever heard of Eat More 2 Weigh Less? There is a group on here, I'd think it would be well worth your time to check it out. :)
  • Thank you everyone for your input!! It's good to see so many people able to help ^^

I agree with the above. If I could go back in time I would slam my younger-self until I got in the gym and lifted stuff. Seriously I'd give that little pansy-arsed fat boy a good talking to! :grumble:

YOU WILL NOT GET BULKY - EVER. PERIOD. This is a ridiculous misconception. Check out the success pages and search for 'women who lift'. Have a look at one of the best MFP success stories too, her username is Sarauk2sf - sorry to embarrass you by singling you out Sara  . She lifts more than most guys and looks fine as hell - even kept her ample badonk!

Start off with light exercises or body weight, you dont even have to go into a gym if you dont want to.Pushups, squats, pullups on the dining table - there are heaps of ways to start to develop some strength.

    DO IT!!

Try a Strong class or Zumba tone to start. You can use light weights combined with aerobics. You might also try weight circuits 2-3 times a week. I've been doing Strong classes for about one month and it really helps with energy.
