I am a hairstylist, and I keep hearing something called a brazillian blowout, which is supposed to be this new and improved miracle to straighten hair, or if you have really curly hair, it will defrizz it and feel super silky soft. It also has a psuedonym of Brazillian Keratin Treatment. If you are considering this, please read this article about the hazzards. I am sure it works, but at what cost to your health? They use the word Keratin, because your hair is made up of keratin protein, which sounds lovely. But it actually has Fromaldyhide(used for embalming the dead) and has caused some SERIOUS health issues. So, not only is it hella expensive, it is supppper contriversial.

Do not ever be afraid to ask your stylist if they use this product. If you are a hyperallergic person. it could do harm just being in the salon while someone is getting it done because when they apply heat, the fromaldyhide realeses in the air in large quantaties.

Now if your hair is SUPPPPER damaged, and they suggest you do this, there is a product called Kpak deep penetrating reconstuctor by Joico, which i use ALL THE TIME. It adds the essential amino acids that your hair is made up of back into your hair. So basically, you are filling in the holes of your hair with this product. it is not NEARLY as expensive (about 30 dollars for a large size compared to a 500 dollar btk treatment) and I use mine about every 2 washes. I even sleep with mine over night and just wrap my head in a towl because the longer its in, the better. Then i rinse it out in the moring

Another reconstructor product that is good is called tigers grunge, and its a protein spray that literally forms a barier around your hair so when you add heat or even brush it, it keeps the hair intact. The only downfall is that some people don't like that protein smell it has(it doesn't bother me at all, because to me it doesn't smell bad)

I hope this information helped and ladies stay looking lovely!!!

    Thanks for the info :)
  • Thanks for posting. I was kind of curious about what this treatment actually does for your health and what the alternatives there were.

Thanks for the info-not that I would ever get that done.
About the protein treatments....are they vegan?
My hair is waist length, hardly any damage (I used to dye {manic panic} and bleach). I only use Nature's Gate products, I do not use heat of any kind (flat iron, curling iron, hair dryer). I find it unnessesary to use any treatments on my hair because I do not use heat or styling products.

Zerran Hair care is the vegan line we sell here, and i'm not sure if they have a deep re-constructor but I'm sure they have something in deep conditioning. They have an oil that my friend used(she has almost like black feeling hair) and she said it was sooo silky afterwords.

Merrakesh is a really good sulfate free line that we sell here and I have heard soo many good things about it. The owner and our receptionist use it and they said their hair feels completely different from when they started and how it's much more manageable than before.

There is a Brazilian Keratin treatment that does NOT have formaldehyde in it. There are two versions- so look for the all natural one without formaldehydee. I had this done 1 month ago and IT IS INCREDIBLE!!

you ahve to be careful though because some will say its not fromaldyhide and its called analyde which is the same thing, liek when they say something is alcohol free but it has ethynol on it....so really get the facts and even ask to see the ingredients in it before you say yes to the procedure! But i'm glad your hair turned out good!
