POP in hip when jogging

I got up this morning and it was AWESOME weather outside so I started walking. I walk about a 3.5 mph pace and I've been trying to jog little bits here and there. I jogged my first length (don't stop till you get to that mailbox! ha) and was fine. Walked another .25 miles and started my other little jog. Halfway through my jog length it feels like a muscle in my left hip (high side, not deep like a joint) went POP! I stopped jogging and kept walking, albeit slower than I prefer. Question is this: Should I keep working out on this (have boot camp tomorrow night) or should you actually take rest days when you pull a muscle?

    Is it painful?
Is there still a sense of popping? (e.g when climbing stairs)

    Is your piriformis tight?
  • There's no "popping" in the hip.. it was just a big POP at once like a rubber band breaking in half (OUCH, yes). So I'm assuming I really, really pulled a muscle. Yeah, it hurts lol, I can barely walk once I get up from sitting or laying down because obviously it's not warmed up.

If it's that painful, you should definitely rest it - nothing weight bearing.
Have you iced it? Taken an NSAID?

Where's the pain? Is it in the outer bit of the hip (where you described the popping) or is it deeper inside? Is there an anchor for the pain in your buttock?
  • No anchor for pain in my butt at all. If you stood up straight with your hands by your sides the pain is DIRECTLY where my wrists are (I'm 5'2). I haven't iced it or anything yet. I know, I've been lazy today.

Get some ice on it, and see how it feels.

There's a tendon where you describe, that kind of moves over the hip joint. Most commonly pain there is linked to bursitis, but it can also be caused by tightness in the piriformis.

See if you're in more pain from sleeping on it tonight.

And you could try a foam roller down the side of the leg to see if it's tightness there that's causing it - but be careful not to bring it too high up onto the hip itself - it will aggravate a bursitis if that is the problem, if you roll over the top of it.

Of course, you likely don't want to be listening to some eejit on the web, who only has her own hip pain to go from. You might want to get to a physio - especially if the pain persists more than a day or so.
  • lol well I thank you
