Just killed my second HRM

I have went through 2 Polar HRM in 2 years. They both do the same thing. They work great then all of a sudden my heart rate measures at 200 to 400! I have tried new batteries and new straps but nothing works. I can send into company to be fixed but that is $50 and I got them new for only $55. Any ideas?
