Motivation to "take the plunge"

Ever since December I have been going to join the "y" and start exercising- even if it's just to walk around the track- I know I will exercise of I actually pay to go somewhere and have to make time to do it. (i love exercising btw). Anyways.. One week goes by and then another and then another. I think because of my current weight I have a fear of going to the gym. I know I shouldn't.. i mean who's going to tease me for going to the gym? Why do I have more fear of going to a gym than I do to go out to eat- let alone a Buffet? Makes no sense to me. lol. Anyways- i guess I just need some motivation.. im always finding excuses- (ie.. i dont have the money this week... too much homework from school this week..) but i know the real reason is im just scared to actually go! I wouldn't even know what to do! haha.. but i do want to go- i LOVE the feeling you get after you've exercised- it gets addicting once you start doing it!
I even went out and bought new 'running' shoes and workout clothes for myself!

I was really scared at first too, but I finaly forced myself and then I forced myself into a bathing suit and into the pool now it is no big deal. I chose the time when there was the fewest people at the gym and I started going and the more I went the better I felt about going. Now the people expect to see me there and they ask why when I am not there.
Trust me you are going to feel 100% better about it once you just start doing it. :flowerforyou:0 -

oh that's another thing- when is the least busiest times? I dont want to go in the evenings- i know they are busy.. i was thinking 3x a week after i drop my oldest off at school- so around 9am i would be there with my 14 month old- i just dont want to start out going when the gym is packed with people either!0 -
I remember my first time at the gym...I didn't go until I had lost about 75 pounds (REALLY regret that decision now, in hind sight). I think, unfortunately, the fear that most of us have is that there is no one but "hardbodies" in gyms and that everyone will be looking at the overweight people! I was very surprised (and relieved) when I decided to join a gym to find that most of the people actually looked like me! The most important thing I did was to take a tour of the gyms in my area, prior to signing up with any of them. This will allow you to see the general attitude among the staff, what programs are available as well as what the other members look like. Basically you'll KNOW when you feel at home! For those that want a quieter time, I think, across the board, in the day time, the slow times are from noon until around 4:30 and in the evening, from about 8 until closing. Being part of a gym, if it works into your schedule, can be such a rewarding experience.....you'll find "workout buddies" that push you farther!0

Hope this helps...I have been a member of our local Y for about two years and I LOVE it! I, too, was hesitant in the beginning, but you will soon find there is no reason to worry. The staff in our area is really welcoming and helpful and the other members are there for their own benefit and focus on their workout, not what others are doing (or not doing). Early afternoon seems to be the quietest, but check to see what their childcare hours are. If you like group excerise, mornings are good and you might make new friends with other moms. I say put on your snazzy new workout clothes and shoes and go have some fun!!!0

At my gym the least busy time is when they first open and the 1hour and 30 minutes before close. I don't know about your area though.0 -

Just call the front desk at your gym and ask. Someone, maybe the manager, will know the answer to that question. It differs from gym to gym.
Also, remember that everybody at the gym is so busy trying to get their own workout in that they don't worry about you or judge you for the most part. When I used to go to the Y, there were almost always many different body types working out. At first, you will have to just make yourself go, but you'll get into a routine and it will become part of your day.
