Easy, lower fat gyros

I love gyros and greek food in general, but I don't love the calories. I found a recipe for easy gyros that uses sliced roast beef from the deli instead of lamb. I served it last night with low carb pitas (60 calories per pita), lowfat feta cheese and nonfat greek yogurt tsatsiki. And of course, red onions, tomatoes and olives. This is the recipe: http://tastykitchen.com/blog/2011/08/quick-and-easy-gyros/ BTW, I found that it didn't need oil when I heated it in a nonstick pan.

Today I had a gyro salad for lunch with the leftovers.

Looks good, but I don't see the roast beef making a big difference calorie wise. Lamb isn't lean but it's delicious.

That looks really good! Like previous poster said, I wouldn't be too worried about the meat, especially since deli meat can be packed with sodium I would opt for "real" meat instead of processed.
  • I do a grilled chicken version. I don't like lamb anyway.

I use a marinade of olive oil, red vinegar, lemon, chopped garlic, & oregano.
I let it marinade for about an hour, and grill or broil.

I use trader joe's cucumber sauce Tazaki sauce.
Cut up lettuce, tomato, red onion. Yumm!!!

I can make a salad just like that, sometimes I'll throw it on a while wheat pita.

I guess I should have emphasized the "easy" part of this recipe, lol.

We enjoy grilled chicken gyros, too, but we're not big fans of lamb.

Bah, the thing I love about gyros is the lamb!
