Proper calculation of calories burnt while playing hockey..

Hi There,

I never post on here but I have a question about logging exercise. I run 2-3 times a week and I play hockey 2-3 times a week. It is simple to log the running because I use runkeeper to track my runs. However, when I play hockey, it simply asks you the time you spent exercising. This might be a stupid question but does that mean the time I'm actually on the ice or the duration of the workout period? For example, in a 60 minute game, I'll play anywhere between 20-30 minutes of the game time. So should I be estimating the amount of time I'm actually playing or the duration of the game. For those that don't play hockey, your shifts usually last 1-2 minutes (at least in the beer leagues I play in). The pro's are doing 30-60 second shifts. So basically you have 1-2 minutes on, 1-2 mins off and the duration of the game is 60 minutes.

Thanks!

I'm no expert, but I think you need two calculations for this: 1 would be for your total TOI (say, 30 minutes of hockey) and the other one some kind of percentage for 30 minutes of hockey so that you have a total of 60 minutes of hockey.

Reason being, I think your metabolism is still working while you wait for your next shift, so it'd be fair to say that you're still burning calories while you're sitting though likely not at the same rate of when you're actually on the ice.

So if in a 60 minutes of hockey inputted on MFP you burn, say, 800 calories then I think it'd be fair to add 400 for your 30 minutes of playing and another 200 to account for your metabolism's work while you wait.

Like I said, I'm no expert and I'm totally making up the number for your metabolism's work while you wait for your next shift so take this with a grain of salt.

You need to use TOI multiplied by the percentage of time you use full exertion.

Honestly I'd estimate 250-300 cal per game if you're playing 30 min and leave it at that. That's slightly less than you'd burn if you ran at max speed that whole time.

For reference for you I use a Bodymedia Fit Link for calorie burn tracking and I've been wearing it playing hockey the last two months. On average over an hour and a half of playing open hockey I burn about 1250 calories playing the full 90 minutes as a goalie. For that I'm at about 57 minutes of vigorous activity and 33 minutes of moderate. Depending on how hard you go I would say, 30 minutes of vigorous activity and probably 15-20 minutes of elevated heart rate waiting for your next shift. Hope that helps!

    What is your height/Weight?

I've been playing goalie for many years, but am now trying to track calories burned. I play at least one a week in a 90 minute (or more) game with no whistles. I've been looking for something that gives a decent account of calories burned for goalies, and this is the best I've found so far. Thanks for posting!!
