Workouts after c-sections

I was wondering if others who have had C-sections had difficulties with their workouts. I had three C-sections and tried ab workouts a week ago and i am still in pain. It feels like I just had the surgery. Though its been four years since my youngest was born it still feels like I just got it done. My pain tolerance is pretty high and I still try to get in the rest of my workouts, but just lifting weights today pulled those stomach muscles and scar tissue and took away my breath. Is this going to be a forever thing or will it get easier?

I'm 2.5 years post C-section (only one though) and I still have pulling occasionally. I would see a physio who is experienced with post abdo surgery (especially C-sections), or find a trainer who has experience in same. It sounds like you might need to build strength in that area to stop it pulling on the wrong parts. My core is still quite weak, and needs a lot of work, probably yours does too.

I'm a little over a year out from my c-section. I've had tugging and pain in that area too. It is probably just muscles getting used to being together and doing actual work again.

I know someone who had a c-section and had a lot of scar tissue causing them problems, they had a physio therapist work on it and they were able to fix it.

I had my c-section 5 years ago and I haven't felt any issues. Although I think when I first started losing weight like 2 years ago I seem to recall some pulling sensations. Maybe it's just something you have to give time to go away, totally not what you wanted to hear I'm sure.

im 1 yr PP and not having that problem. did they cut your muscles or something? I know my OB stressed the fact that none of mine were touched or damaged... ive also only had one csection. my other children were born vaginal .maybe thats the difference?

I don't know how they could perform a c-section without cutting through muscle. Seems physically impossible.

I had two c-sections (the second one was almost 7 years ago) and I only felt that strange pulling for the first year or so. Some people form more scar tissue than others. You should definitely get it checked out and it may require a simple surgical procedure to sever the scar tissue that's adhered to the muscle wall. My mother had it done after a hysterectomy years ago. It shouldn't hurt at this point! Good luck...

Just tagging for my sister in law. She was just released to workout a few days ago, she's 4 weeks PP. Didn't realize I took for granted that I didn't have a c-sect and jumped right back into working until now. Major props to you all for working thru it!! :drinker:

yeah.....i would definitely get that checked out. i had a c-section 1 year ago and other than the normal pain for a few weeks afterward, i have had no residual pain or pulling or anything.
  • Thanx all who have replied so far. My first C-section the doc who did the surgery did mess up a bit. When I went in for my 2nd C-section my regular ob/gyn did it and told me the previous doc did a hack job and the cut wasn't straight at all. Though the first two didn't bother me at all and the last baby was big. I had no idea I could have it corrected and will definitely look into it.

I'd like to second (or third) the recommendation to see a physiotherapist. Just ask around and make sure you find a good one. There are some who specialise in issues like yours. I didn't have a c-section, but I did have a long bikini cut for a hysterectomy in 2005 and I wish someone had told me to work on those muscles. My weak core (not all from surgery) has caused no end of back problems and I wasn't doing the right things to help. A great physiotherapist and the PT he recommended have helped tremendously. Don't give up!
