Transitioning from walking to running

Hello all,

I am a 59 year old man that is trying to get into shape for the first time in a number of years. My goal is to run a 5K or maybe even a 10K by my 60th birthday, which is next June. I really only started a walking routine in July and did about 40 miles in August and and have a goal of 50 miles in September. I am still a little over 300 lbs, but am getting close to breaking that barrier, hopefully by the end of this month.

All that said, I am concerned about making the transition from walking to running and the impact on my knees and feet. I am currently walking 2-4 miles a day, sometimes 2 miles twice a day at a pace of about 3.5 miles per hour. What is the best way to transition to running? I live in snow country, so am going to have to be moving to the gym in the next month or two.

Thanks for any and all input.

JB.

Find an interval program like Couch to 5k or check out Jeff Galloway. Use run/walk intervals, go slow and build up your time and endurance. Definitely get cleared by your doc and get some proper running shoes, too.
