My foot hurts! Why?

Options
I started running between 4 and 5 miles about 6 days a week a month ago and I'm starting to enjoy it! they only thing is that for the past week and a half or so the top of my foot has been hurting! Its in the top of my right foot close to my ankle joint. What is that? I don't think I run funny or anything and I'm fairly in shape so it's not like there's a very large amount of strain put on my joints. I'm just confused

This happened to me recently too. Turns out I have a small fracture somewhere in there. Just take some time off until it heals or BELIEVE ME it will get worse. I didn't listen to my body and ran anyways and destroyed it. Ice it, stretch it, and keep it up. It should be good to go in 2-3 days. After that, I would stretch your feet before you run. That's about how much I was doing and it's a pretty hefty run on the feet.

I had something similar but in the middle of the top of my foot. I have really high arches, so even though I was running properly, it turned out I had some small stress fractures. I would go to a doctor and get it checked out. I ended up needing to rest and have custom arch supports fit and made with a podiatrist.

Are you wearing proper running shoes? Did you start running this mileage and frequency right off the bat, or did you work up to it? Running *does* put a lot of strain on joints (being in shape has nothing to do with it) - about 3x your body weight with each foot strike. I agree with the others who said to get it checked out - could be a SF. Many times a SF will not show up on an x-ray, so you may need to get an MRI.

Sounds like a case of too much, too soon, too fast.

Running requires a lot of physiological adaptations and to go from zero to running 6 times per week is not necessarily a good way to approach it (we're often victims of our own enthusiasm). Take a few days off, ice the affected area (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) and if the symptoms aren't relieved seek medical treatment - as others have mentioned it could be a stress fracture (an overuse injury).

This happened to me 1 week ago, could barely put any pressure onto my foot on Friday, today it has just about totally healed - its a good job too as I have a 12KM on Sunday!

I have no idea what it was, I think I just strained a tendon.

I started off running earlier in the summer. Just running for maybe 10 or 20 minutes. Then I went up to 30 minutes and then ultimately 40. Along with running (before I did 40 minutes) I would use an elliptical to get up to my goal of at least 40 minutes of cardio. It's only my right foot too!! As I type it aches. I've been icing it which does help and I've been taking advil. I don't want to stop running though -_-

See a sports MD or podiatrist. Top of the foot pain could be a stress fracture or tendonitis. Or it could be something as simple as lacing your shoes too tight.

I would try to not run consecutive days. Sounds like overuse injury.
