Knee pain

Hi all.
I am hoping some of you can help or give me a little advice, anyway. I am 5' 3" and 182 pounds. When I started this insanely difficult journey, I was 232 pounds. That was 3 1/2 years ago (I've had quite an on-again-off-again relationship with my weight loss). I was doing amazingly from January of this year until after I reached my first goal, The Dirty Girl Mud Run at the end of April. I celebrated that night, and fell off.

I get off topic a lot.

Anyway, I have started back again, slowly, but I'm back. I have gotten my food pretty much under control and am getting there on my exercise. The problem is that I am having some knee pain when I work out or walk a lot. I bought new shoes in March that I spent too much money on but I let the specialty shoe store do their thing. I have never had a knee injury and this has never really been a problem before.

Is this normal for someone of my size? I am doing the 30 DS again, which I have done in the past, but it seems harder this time with my knee.

Any suggestions on a good, challenging workout that won't be so hard on my knee??

    Wow you're doing great.

Knee pain doesn't sound good - have you seen a doctor? Might be worth it.

Thanks. I have not seen a doctor......probably a good idea. :( It only hurts when I work out or do major walking.

Congratulations on how far you have come. Knee pain is never normal. It always indicates something is wrong. It can be anything from muscle imbalances, tightness in your IT band, tendinitis, injuries, or arthritis. Have a doctor look at it as there is little chance of getting a proper diagnosis on an Internet forum. As someone with recurring knee issues, having it looked at is the best thing you can do. Deal with the problem early rather than when it causes bigger issues.

I have chronic knee pain. I try to do no/low impact exercise. Elliptical, bike, rower, yoga. Swimming is also great. Weight lifting is no impact and helps you maintain and build lean body mass.
I've been to many physical therapists, foot/ankle docs, and sports medicine docs. Low/no impact is the best way to go for those of us with joint issues. You can still get an incredible workout without running/walking!

Have you tried exercising in a different pair of shoes? Although they were expensive, it's no guarantee that they are suitable for you. If you use different shoes for a few days and still get knee pain, I'd go and see a doctor.
  • Look up patelofemoral knee pain. If you haven't had an actual injury than this could be the problem. I was same height/weight and started jogging, only to land in an orthopedics office who said its actually fairly common in young women when they become fit and hips fill out, it puts uneven strain on your knee joint and the only way to fix it is by doing physical therapy (at home for free). Look up exercises that strengthen the VMO muscle. Within about a month my knee pain was dramatically better, but Im 10 months into this pain and I can't do 30DS anymore, and it actually started when I was doing 30DS daily, sometimes twice daily. It's too hard on the knee, and pushing through it if your knee is hurting will lead to an injury! good luck :)

30DS isn't for people who don't know correct form for squats or jumps because the first indication of bad form is knee pain. Get your form checked first. Also certain shoes, don't work well with weight lifting or plyometric training.
