High Sensitivity to Carbohydrates - Advice?

Hello -
I have been tested to have a very high sensitivity to carbohydrates, and it was explained that it was a main reason I gained as much weight as I did.
I always considered myself a carb-aholic. I love bread and pastries... but mostly bread.
So since I have this issue, does anyone have any tips on what kind of foods I should absolutely stay away from, and which ones to lean towards? I know there is a difference between "good" and "bad" carbohydrates; I just don't know what it is.
Also, since I basically crave having bread and other carbs almost all the time, is there anything that can replace that void?
Thanks for any advice

Hi , like you I was ( & still am ) a carb junkie & yes mine was for bread , rice , pasta , pastry - basically anything I could get my teeth into ! I could get through a family sized loaf of white bread on my own in a day & that was just in snacks alone !! I felt very sluggish , tired & bloated all the time but couldn't stop . As a result of this I developed type 2 diabetes which I've had for about six years now . As I developed complications this summer I needed to change my habits . Since being on mfp I have watching the calories sugars & more importantly , for me ,processed carbs . I made a conscious effort to cut out processed carbs . I still have some carbs but opt for whole grain varieties as it takes the body longer to break these down & so doesn't spike my blood glucose too high . Also I don't tend to have too many carbs in my evening meal as I found I was feeling awfully uncomfortable & bloated . So instead of having potatoes / pasta etc I will have more vegetables., which still have carbs in but don't bloat my tummy . Since doing this I have noticed a difference in the size of my tummy & lost 2 dress sizes . Feel free together I touch for mutual understanding & support .0

Every snack, every meal, better ratio of macros.
The default ones are too low on protein, so increasing that while leaving fats alone lowers carbs automatically.
Always eat within your meal or snack whatever protein and fat is available before the carbs in any meal.
While a single bagel could hit you hard, you might find half a bagel with protein and fat doesn't at all.
Then again, things like bagels or simple breads should probably be left out until body doesn't over-respond.
That in itself isn't responsible for weight gain, but the sugar drop you get, feeling hungry, and you deciding to eat more is why you gain weight.0 -
I replaced regular pasta with the smart taste brand, and only eat it maybe once or twice a month. I cut out most bread, sometimes I have a bagel thin or corn tortilla instead. To fill the void, just pile on the veggies. After a while, you forget about the bread, at least I did:)0

There is no such thing as carb sensitivity. You need carbs like eveybody else. But you need good carbs - not rubbish. You need starches like potatoes and rice. These do not make the chinese or bolivians fat until they come over to the west and try our junk foods. If you stop eating carbs you will go into ketosis and make your self ill
The elephant eats thorns and bark and it does not get fat.
So why should you? Yes bread is a processed food but it is the white flour and white sugar which will give you type 2 Diabetes
And by the way dairy fat will kill you as well and meat will clog your arteries with cholesterol
Easy really carbs in - carbs out exercise and get a proper scale - watch your portion size - sounds as though you are fond of large meals to me - my problemo also0 -
Eggplant and zucchini make good pasta replacements they have a lot of water in them so to use them for say lasagna I'd suggest baking them for about 10 minutes at 350 first. I discovered just today that butternut squash cut into strips are very good baked, cut and sprinkle with your favorite seasonings and they could easily replace french fries for me. I would also suggest wild and brown rice as a rice replacement and for breads stick with whole grains but use thinner sliced bread or sandwich thins and you'll see the carb addiction you feel drift away. I was once where you are now, good luck!0

Swap out white pasta, bread etc for wholegrains and maybe check the glycemic index of stuff (stuff with a low GI like sweet potato will keep you going for longer so you'll be less likely to need more carbs later). Also check you're getting enough protein, because it keeps you full...if you up your protein intake you might find you take in carbs less.0
