Protein Shakes for femaie trying to tone

I've only just started to work out and get toned. I was advised to take protein shakes when I'm starting out and as I'm trying to build more muscle by doing weight training and some cardio to burn off fat around my stomach/lower back (problem area).

I'm NOT trying to lose weight. I'm trying to get rid of the excess fat on my stomach and lower back, as well as tone my arms. Think muffin top. Ultimately, I want a nicely toned body, and if possible, abs! I understand I may end up gaining weight as I build up more muscle. That's fine by me.

I am currently 170cm and 54kg.
I am trying to eat healthy and cut out the unnecessary junk foods in my diet. I'm trying to include more protein in my diet with meats, nuts, tofu etc.

How much protein and when should I take the shakes? I have the Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey as many people have recommended it to me. I have been taking one scoop post-workout. Should I take it before working out too?

    Well to clear it up, you can't use an exercise (cardio) to spot reduce any part of your body. So doing cardio isn't going to lower body fat around your waist. That comes from calorie deficit. But in calorie deficit, it's almost improbable to add any lean muscle. Now if you do add lean muscle, you'll need to be in calorie surplus, but that would also mean adding more body fat since it's inevitable.
    What you need to choose is whether you want to lose body fat overall or gain muscle overall. Both can be done at the same time however I've seen it only significantly happen with people who have already put in a couple of years of training or more.

    Two different goals, two different types of shake. Least calories per gram of Protein when losing weight. Cheapest when trying to gain it!

    If you want more muscle, you want the cheapest protein as you need to eat more and at a surplus. If you want your muscles to look better, then you want low Cal protein so you eat enough protein while losing weight on a deficit, as you want to burn fat but keep muscle.

    Different goals, Toning is one or the the other depending on your current bodyfat.

    these are my favorites:

    If you like gingerbread, Oxygen magazine has a recipe for a delicious Gingerbread cookie shake: 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder, 1/2 cup vanilla enriched Rice Dream, 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt, 1/2 tsp ginger, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1 T molasses, and ice cubes. Blend and drink ! Mmmmmm

    I also like a Creamsicle, which is a cup of orange juice (I get the Healthy kids kind with extra calcium and vitamins), half a scoop of vanilla protein powder (I’ve been getting spirulina), and a lowfat vanilla yogurt. Blend and drink.

    The Protein Packed Pina Colada smoothie is blended with the following ingredients: Cup cottage cheese, cup canned pineapple or cup pineapple juice, half a frozen banana, half a cup of milk, 1 T coconut, half a scoop vanilla protein powder, and a cup of ice cubes.

    The Key Lime Protein Shake is blended with half an avocado, juice of a lime, 2 tsp lime zest, 1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder, 1 T coconut, a cup of milk, and 1-2 packets of Stevia (optional).

    The Chocolate Maple Shake is made by blending a cup of milk, 3 T protein powder, 1 T cocoa powder, and 1 tsp maple syrup

    1 scoop vanilla powder, 1 ½ cups skim milk, ½ -1 cup frozen peaches, ½ tsp almond extract, ½ tsp cinnamon

    Apple Cinnamon
    1 scoop vanilla powder, 1 ½ cups skim milk, ½-1 cup of chopped frozen apple, 1 tsp cinnamon

    Apple Pie Delight -- YUMMY
    1 scoop of vanilla powder, 1 peeled and cored apple, cut into pieces, 1 ½ cups of milk,
    ½ tsp cinnamon, ½ tsp nutmeg, 5 Ice Cubes, Microwave the apple pieces for 2 minutes on high. Add all ingredients to blender, puree for 30 seconds.

    1 scoop vanilla powder, 1 ½ cups skim milk, ¼-½ cup frozen watermelon

    Mocha Shake
    6 oz. Water, 4 ice cubes, 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream, 6 oz. coffee*, 2 scoops chocolate powder, *You may use 12 oz. coffee and no water for an extra pre-workout or morning kick!

    Nada Colada Protein Shake
    2 scoops vanilla, ½, cup pineapple-orange juice*, ¼ tsp rum extract, ¼ tsp coconut extract (or 2 tbsp shredded coconut), 1 packet artificial sweetener, 4 oz. water (or low-fat milk), 3-6 ice cubes, Low-carb version: Omit juice and use ½ tsp sugar-free pineapple-orange drink mix (dry). Increase water or milk to 8 oz, Add all ingredients to blender, whip, and serve.

    Oatmeal Meal Replacement Shake

    Peanut Brittle Protein Shake
    2 scoops vanilla, 1 tbsp sugar-free instant butterscotch pudding mix, dry 1 tbsp natural peanut butter, chunky, 8 oz. cold water or lowfat milk, 3-6 ice cubes This mimics peanut brittle only in taste. Add all ingredients to blender, blend, and serve. I like to add the peanut butter in last so it stays a little chunky, just like the peanut brittle it is replacing.

    Peanut Butter And Banana Shake
    2 scoops Vanilla, 100g almond flakes, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 500ml skim milk, half banana, 1 tbsp honey

    Peanut Butter Chocolate Truffle
    2 scoops chocolate powder, 1 tsp peanut butter, 16 ounces nonfat milk, ½ cup ice cubes

    Peppermint Oatmeal Shake
    Mix 2 scoops of Milk Chocolate Protein, 1 cup sugar free vanilla ice cream, 1 cup oatmeal, 2 cups non-fat milk, ½ cup water, a splash of peppermint extract!

I've been taking 1-3 scoops a day, though I still only eat 1200 calories on days that I don't have kickboxing; on days that I do I might eat like 1600, 1700 tops but what can I say, I'm a hungry girl. I feel like I can't lose weight anymore and I'm only twenty pounds away from my goal, is this what's stopping me?? I haven't lost a pound in almost a month, all I can do is maintain my weight and I can't get it down!!

    Do you log the 1-3 scoops of protein powder you consume a day? Do you log/weigh all your other food? If you haven't lost weight in a whole month you're probably not eating at a calorie deficit.
