chopped sirloin patty...calories?

I am trying to be a bit more diverse in my food choices. i went to a nice (upscale) restaurant for lunch that features steak, primary. I ordered a plain chopped sirloin patty--8 ounces. i believe it was broiled. that was all i had. the calories on MFP seem to be all over the place, but could someone estimate the calorie content? it seemed very lean. no chewiness or gristle. thank you. beef is a new food for me...so i am a little hesitate, but I want to keep integrating it as it is such a good source of protein.

  • the original menu item was the patty (described above), cottage cheese and tomato. so i guess it was being pushed as a healthier option. i don't know. maybe it was a mistake.

I would just do 8oz sirloin steak grilled or broiled.

Don't confuse "healthy" with caloric density. "Healthy" doesn't always mean low calorie...and low calorie is not always "healthy"...a calorie is just a unit of energy. Beef is a good source of protein but tends to be fattier than poultry and most cuts of pork..even lean cuts of beef tend to be fattier. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does add to the calorie content. 8 oz is roughly double the standard 4 oz serving of beef...so just pick sirloin and 8 oz from the database.

It's difficult with any meat because it'll never be exact...there's no exactly X grams of fat in a given cut..all cows are different...so while a certain cut like sirloin may be lean in general, it is going to vary from cow to cow and thus steak to steak and the calorie content will vary as well. Just give it your best estimate....type in USDA sirloin, that'll probably be your best bet...if I recall, it's about 240 calories per 4 oz serving, give or take.

    MFP values:

Beef - Ground, 85% lean meat / 15% fat, patty, cooked, broiled (hamburger) or
Beef - Ground, 95% lean meat / 5% fat, patty, cooked, broiled (hamburger)

For 8 oz you're looking at 500+ calories.

You have to be careful when you order steak at a restaurant. They very frequently cook it in butter which makes it much much more fattening than if you were to cook a piece of meat at home.

Or you could go with ground sirloin. Either way, a lean sirloin is somewhere between 185 and 205 calories for a 3 oz serving so your lunch was somewhere between 500 and 550 calories. Best guess is better than nothing!
  • oh well. i tried to do the best with what i had at a "steak" restaurant. guess i will just have to be careful for the rest of the week. thanks for the input everyone.
