schools can suspend for playing with toy guns at home?

"The school's so-called "zero-tolerance" policy on guns extends to private property, according to the report."
This made my head explode. We live in a dictatorship now, and have been going in that direction for decades.
We have arrived.
We have not arrived in my opinion, its only going to get worse unless the sheeple rise up and complain. We re elect the same administration, we don't complain when we find out that the govt.is watching our every e mail and monitoring our phone calls, we sit and watch while laws are quietly changed and very few speak out against any of it.0 -
This might not end well....0

Butt hurt? No, Dumbfounded more like it.
Common sense seems to be a mythological creature these days. California being the epitome of stupidity.
When the Government keeps increasing our debt ceiling and we are now almost $17 Trillion dollars in debt....no one talks about that. Or how the Feds pump in $58 Billion dollars of stimulus per month for the past 5 years. Oh no..we would rather talk about the Salvation Army that helps people, or Chickfila and what one of the founders said in a private meeting, or Paula Dean for using certain language. When if that is the issue of racist and bigotry why not go after the likes of Samuel L. Jackson a known black panther associate?
No, you just get your news from terrible sources if this is your experience0 -
I'm going to bet that there is more to this "story" than has been printed.
Schools have enough to worry about with common core standards and funding being based upon test scores than what a kid is doing in his/her yard.
I'd put money on there being more to this than the story...0 -
If they were to suspend kids here for playing with guns then that would be most of the community lol, we live in a rural farming community .0

Reason number 5,483 to homeschool. Gun safety is a required course in our school. And so is target practice, after the age of 10. And I think hunting will be added next year. My daughters are so excited about that one...0

>Primary School officials do something staggeringly stupid involving a "zero tolerance policy"
No one is surprised by this. When was the last time a zero tolerance policy produced a result more fair than a policy that allowed sensible judgement? Hint: Never.
Draconian out of proportion punishments for things that are not actually offenses are the expected result, not unusual at all. They're written to do that.0 -
So if we are going this route with our country having a Zero restriction POS tolerance policy shouldn't we be suing toy makers and banning Toy's r us, wa-lmart etc etc who sell these "types" of toys?
This is beyond BS0 -
Not to defend the school or the decision but the two articles pointed to are very one sided. And in both I can see a reason why the school may have acted. There was a child en-route to the bus stop, the school takes some level of responsibility for making the bus stops a safe environment for the child and therefore if that child complained that he was shot at even with a toy gun then your zero tolerance rule kicks in and the kids are suspended first and then the conversation happens after. Zero Tolerance rules have 1 outcome, suspension until a hearing takes place. Many of the zero tolerance rules are stupid and do not allow for common sense to kick in at all. Look at some of the suspensions that have happened in the last year, such as the girl with braces who brought a butter knife to school to cut an apple because she couldn't bite into it. They are set this way to protect the vast majority of their student body at the expense at times of the few who cross some invisible line.
I would lend more to the decision after the hearing than the suspension itself. If they get expelled or they extend the suspension then that is when I would see more reason for outrage.0 -

I think THIS ^^^^^^^^^^ should be required for EVERY student in schools. If Sex education and drivers ed, etc. Why not proper gun safety and target practice?0 -
Well I guess I can appreciate living in Texas for this point... we may be teaching a bastardized version of biology, but by God at least our boys won't get suspended for pretending to use a gun (which they will do with sticks and poptarts as well because it's a boy thing... it happens even in homes where there is no reference of guns or weapons shown).0

Do we really want to offer gun safety in school? We can't even get sex or drivers ed right.... Not sure that is such a good idea, tbh.0 -

I agree with this. The original quote somehow the link no longer worked. The site must have pulled the article down.0 -

Yes, because it would be a NRA approved instructor. This would reduce accidental deaths and such.0 -

In before the lockdown. Intriguing conversation. I would def like to hear the other side.
Suspending the kid while waiting for a hearing is still punishing him - he's missing out on so much class if they take too long.0 -

I was doing target practice at the age of 5 with both guns and bows, and I'm a completely non-violent person.
I would have been so confused if I went to school and got in trouble for this..0 -

Not in a 'public' school. No NRA allowed.0 -

Would love to homeschool. Seriously considering it.0 -
The constitution may award you rights, but individual institutions can--and often do--force you to waive those rights in order to receive their services. And the closer we come to becoming a corporate run state or a majority run state the more this will be the case.
I would have to agree with this statement. Sad fact.
I have to sadly agree as well.
I have a strong opinion on public schools and the waste and mismanagement of time and funds that goes on there....So I will just say, this is why I support voucher programs. Let parents choose where their kids go to school and you will see which ones fail and which succeed.0 -
Also, my dad and brother made us a take a hunters ed course when we were in elementary school. We didn't use any real firearms, just learned the basics of safety and had a test at the end of the 4 hour class. Would be a great requirement for children, Even if they don't live in a home with a gun, it will teach them to respect guns, know what they can do but not to fear them.0
