I have a few people I work with that always use way too many ... in their emails. Like one guy sent me a reply with Thanks... I don't think he knows how to use ellipsis properly. Is there something unsaid after that Thanks?

What I don't like is when people put the entire email in the subject bar and the actual email is blank.
    Pet peeve. Lol.

To me, this is just an example of how uneducated some people are in the form of proper communication.

Coupled with the fact that many people are resorting to using slang in their email messages ("ur" for your or you're for example) shows their attention to detail and lack thereof.

This is a pet peeve of mine. I actually coach and re-coach my staff to form proper emails to me (or any other) when speaking in the formality and professionalism of the work place.

I tend to use the ellipsis as a sarcastic measure so I too get thrown off when I see someone using it. my pet peeve is emails with very few words and no punctuation, that have NOT been sent from a cell phone. we are not texting, I'm emailing you for more details. please provide them. I do not have time to sit here and try to decrypt whatever the **** you just sent me.

I was hired at my current job with no relevant experience because I drafted a well-written cover letter in the body of my email when I applied for the position. I was confused as to why this was such a big deal until I started working here. probably 85% of the emails I receive are nowhere near clear and concise. that's being generous.

it does come off as SO rude. I only use them when emailing one or two of my coworkers in particular and never in anything that needs to be professional.

smiley faces in professional emails also really piss me off. I have good rapport with some of our clients and I break that rule sometimes, but only after they initiate it. I hate getting emails from realtors or title companies I've never worked with that say something like, "HI :-) GLAD TO WORK WITH YOU..... HERE'S FOR A GOOD TRANSACTION..... ;-)" I actually just received that email a few minutes ago which is why I'm back in this thread. the sentiment was nice (and reciprocated, of course) but caps lock abuse is also a serious no no in my book.

am I really this uptight or do people just have ****ty communication etiquette?

Scot, you are really going to hate it here if ellipses bother you.
