Hip clicking

In the last month I have upped my exercise again, after having a lull after getting married over the summer. I noticed a few weeks ago that my hips will now click quite loudly when I'm walking occasionally, especially in the morning when I'm first out of bed. My husband couldn't believe it when I told him the noise was my hips. A vague bit of googling seems to indicate it's a painless symptom of over-training, but I don't think I've been going *that* hard, I've certainly gone harder before.

Does anyone have any experience with hip clicking? Did rest resolve it?

Have a look at snapping hip syndrome. Probably just the tendons (hopefully).

Might be your IT band (aka iliotibial band). Glad you're not in pain, but please don't let that stop you from seeing a specialist. Could be serious, & f left untreated could cause inflamation, bursitis, arthritis etc.

Here's some info. Now go make a doctor's appointment !

Thanks for the links!! Lots of good information. Sounds like rest and anti-inflammatories and stretching would be a good start (after a doctor's appointment!).
  • Totes your IT band like the other poster mentioned. I dislocated my hip when I was younger (gotta love rugby) and between that and overcompensating on my other hip, both click quite regularly. I did PT for a few months, but I haven't found any definitive way to stop it. Something to be aware of though, while mine click painlessly they do sometimes lock and then it's very painful. If this happens, don't freak out:) Just means the band is caught on that hip joint. Just stay still and wait, I know mine snap back after a few minutes.

    Best of luck!

A friend of mine used to have the same issue. When we would walk together you could hear it once in a while. She had it checked out and had to have hip surgery.

I would recommend having it checked out.

I have the snapping hip syndrome of the inner sort (the groin area connection), and I can't do certain dance moves anymore at all, basically (from 1st to 2nd with leg lifted at all). Well, I can go really, really slowly, lol.

Mine hurts as it moves over and snaps (probably scar tissue from doing it so much earlier in life), and it actually inflames the bursa sac there if I try to ignore it. That bursitis hurts for days!

It's good yours doesn't hurt, but do be very careful. Don't let it get scar tissue. You might want to see a physio to make sure what to do or not do. Good luck!
