40 pounds by Christmas??? That's 13 weeks and a loss of over 3 pounds a week. Probably not a very realistic goal. Why not reduce your goal a bit and set yourself up for success rather than trying to attain something that is not likely to happen in a healthy manner?

It's not very realistic unless she has way more than 40lbs to lose. The way I look at it, setting your sights high is a great way to be focused, even if you don't make it all the way. As long as a person doesn't go crazy and starve themselves obtain their far away goal, I don't really see an issue with having it.

I only have about 20-25 pounds to lose in general and would love to have that off by Christmas, but that's a bit of a stretch I fear. Feel free to add me though!

The issue would be that when someone is first starting something new, weight loss or ANYTHING, they should set goals that can be attained and set themselves up for success. I'm not saying don't challenge yourself, but don't be unrealistic either. The first time I tried squatting, I didn't throw 400 pounds on the bar. I started lighter and added weight as I got stronger. It's the same concept.

The other part is learning how to do things in a healthy and sustainable manner. Part of the purpose of being on MFP is to learn how to lose weight, get fit and be healthy and do it the "right" way. Different people have different definitions of the right way so I'm not going to argue that. However, it is very difficult to consistently lose 2 pounds a week, much less more, especially as you get closer and closer to your goal. Learning the best strategies from the beginning is a HUGE step in the right direction and will ultimately cause less frustration in the overall process.

All due respect, but if you didn't keep the weight off when you lost it previously, wouldn't you want to find a method that can work for the short term AND the long term, even if it takes a little longer to get there?
