Is there a way to determine how accurate my HRM calories burned is? I did 30 minutes of aerobic steps with an 8 inch step while holding my 20 pound son (lol), my HRM says I burned 474 calories...does that sound high?

i don't use an hrm, but i don't think that sounds high at all. aerobics with a step burns a ton of calories. if you add holding 20 pounds on top of that, i'm sure that's about what you burned.
  • I can burn 310 (according to my HRM) on my elliptical machine in 30 minutes. I would think with the added weight (your son, how cute) and that much activity sound relative... I thinks its right... just don't eat all of the added back calories then your safe!

I'm also confused about that. I was kind of thinking that you are supposed to cut your daily intake in the first place then eat extra for what you exercise off.

I usually burn 800-1000 calories doing 60 minutes of aerobics (just the step, no rises, and no weight in my hand).

Same here; if I wanted to "maintain" my weight, I'd get to eat more calories each day (without exercise figured in). Then if I exercised, I got to eat more calories to restore what I used (since I'm already cutting back from a 2,000 calorie diet to a 1200 calorie diet....).

I sounds right to me. Please remember that no HRM is perfect. It is giving you an idea could be 100 off either way. I saw a segment on GMA a few months ago and most are higher than actual for all the people they tested.

And it is up to you whether you choose to eat your exercise calories or not. I ususally end up eating mines. But I have my calories lower than what MFP says I should have so in a since I only eat a few.

You may lose more weight if you do not eat all of your calories. It varies. This weight thing is not a perfect science. A lot of it is trial and error. What works for one may not work for others.

    Good luck to you!

Talked to my doctor today about this very thing. My calories can/should be between 1000-1200 (1400 is fine, but won't lose as fast), PLUS whatever calories I 'burn/earn' by exercising.
