Training for Hiking

Hi everyone! I'm new here so I hope I do this right I'm going on a few hiking trips this fall but unfortunately I don't live near any mountains to practice on. I would guess that running would be the best way to train but I get bad ankle/knee pain when I run. Does anyone have tips for other ways to train before I go? Thanks!

The best way to train for hiking is to hike. If there are no mountains, then put on your full pack with the boots you plan to wear, and climb stairs.0

Increasing your resistance by carrying a heavy pack and wearing heavy hiking boots may help. If you're going to be hiking inclines, stairs may be a good choice.
Are you going to be going to an altitude you are not accustomed to? If so, that may be your biggest problem. I moved from sea level to 6,200 feet last spring. I got winded easily for several weeks after the move. Lack of oxygen isn't really something you can train for, but being in your best possible condition and staying very well hydrated may help.0
