Maintaining or losing weight on medication

Hi guys,

I'm a Crohns sufferer, and have been for the last 6 years. I've managed to go on eating plans twice and lose weight over these years without any negative impact on my condition, (eating lots of carbs and dairy actually seems to be what flares it up.)

However, over the last 6 months I've had quite a bad flair up, lots of symptoms and pain etc etc. and yesterday I was put back on a course of steroids, (as I was when I was first diagnosed.)

Now I know and am prepared for the fact that these tablets are going to make me put on weight and increase my appetite. However, I've just lost over 30lbs from having an eating plan and exercise, and I would like not to put that back on.

Do any of you have any experience of dealing with this? The last time I was on the medication was really rough - mood swings, depression, weight gain...I'd prefer to use the next 10 weeks that I'm on them to focus me into training and sticking to my diet, and wondered if anyone has been in a similar position and can offer advice? Or more general advice on how to limit water retention on steroids?

Their response was basically 'see what happens'! If I put on weight I put on weight, I'm just curious to see if anyone else has had a similar experience and found a way to deal with it.

Hi. I have Crohn's too, but have never been on prednisone, which I'm assuming is what you are on. I'm on another corticosteroid - Entocort - which seems to have fewer of the negative side effects of prednisone. I don't get the moon face or weight gain on it.

Have you spoken with your GI about other steroids? Or, due to the severity of your flare-up, is prednisone the only thing that works?

There is a closed Facebook group for Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis sufferers. It's called the Crohn's & Ulcerative Colitis Worldwide Support Group. You may find people on there who have been on prednisone and managed to control the weight gain.
