War and the reason to avoid it?

I have read through Stevens post as to topics to avoid and such like.

I can not see this topic as being anything but something to discuss.

Please try to refrain from blaming other religions, I am not intending to incite any hatred or such like.

My question is ...if there were a potential war, bearing in mind all the things that we have read about lately in the newspapers, or watched on the TV.

How could we as the general public avoid it?

How would it affect your lives, in your opinions?

IMO we are beholden to the political party that supposedly speaks for us as a nation, where ever we are in the world.

Good question has there ever been a war avoided because of public outcry?

Some are inevitable, and some have served the greater good.

    All are a terrible loss.

In my opinion, most wars can and should be avoided.

twinketta, this thread will not end well.

Political discussions are definitely against site guidelines. You make a political statement in your post, it's going to go badly.

That said - who in the world would want war? What kind of a question is this?

Agreed this should be in a debating group.

    War is literally hell!!

Indeed, but how can we as a worldwide populous avoid it?

One wonders if War and Peace would have been as highly acclaimed as it was, had it been published under its original title, "War, What Is It Good For".

Of course, nobody wants a war.

I am asking as to how we could change things in our personal opinions. What it would mean for us?

How it would affect your general life?

I think you would have to have equal distribution of all resources among all human beings that would probably help with religious wars too as homelands would be equally divided.

It's oppression and lack of resources (or desire to gain more resources) that breed war.

Avoid it? It's out of the general public's hand's.

Affect? Would never make it to US soil.

Also ignorance and intolerance of other cultures. and even with equal distribution, some would use theirs up quickly and target their more prudent neighbors.

If you can get it before it sells out. People around here are waiting for delivery trucks to show up at stores, and the price is ridiculous

War is like a drug, even though it is bad , countries will still do it for certain side effects.

After WW2, the US understood how great war is for manufacturing which in turn great for the economy. 47% of the US budget is spent in "defence", if you drop that by 10% the US would be able to spring back to top of the world in many other areas like education and healthcare.

So why avoid something that keeps your country going?

At least this is the US stand on it.

How could we as the general public avoid it? By electing people that are well known to be advocates for war avoidance.... you know people that are typically non-interventionists (not to be confused with isolationists)... but non-interventionism is a "bad" word to a lot of folks.

What is it good for? Well, science and technology research and creates jobs for manufacturers that research/develop/manufacture war machines (and some of them even get converted to civlian use later).

After arming yourself...what I am asking is how we as a worldwide general populous can avoid war. I really do not think any of the citizens of any war torn country want to be in the middle of a conflict..

How can we avoid it and protect ourselves?

Is there a unilateral way for people to prevent it?

Or do we just vote people in to various roles and then they change their manifests?

    your 47% statistic is untrue.

just grabbing my 2011 IRS 1040 instruction book, i can see that in 2010, federal budget outlays were as follows:

    2% - law enforcement + general government
    25% - social programs
7% - physical, human, and community development
6% - interest on the debt
36% - social security, medicare, and retirement benefits
24% - national defense, veterans, and foreign affairs
