Protein Shakes/bars, where do I start?

I am currently in college and I've recently started adding A LOT more strength training into my work out. Well I live on campus and have to eat at the dinning hall here and while they have all kinds of fruits and veggies but as for what they have meat wise I either don't trust their nutritional value or its just not filling enough and I know I need the protein with all of the weight training I've been doing.
In a nut shell I want to start Using protein shakes and/or bars but have no earthly idea where to start, I just need some well informed advice.
