The Moment

The cupcake is right in front of you. You realize you shouldn't eat it....but it looks SOOOO good. Do you have a strategy that helps you get through those tough moments?

These are the moments that define how successful your diet is. Share some of your strategies.

I picture whatever food it is as a huge mound of smelly bubbling fat. That really takes away some of the appeal.

I eat the cupcake and make it fit in my budget because life isn't about depriving yourself. You can't eat the whole cake but you can eat the cupcake.

Since my biggest meal is in the evening, and I often have a glass of wine with it, or some cheese afterwards, I ask myself: would I rather have this cupcake (or donut) now, or a glass of wine and some cheese later. The wine and cheese usually win. (I could never become a vegan because of cheese.)

I picture people who deny themselves things that they want and how miserable they must be... while enjoying the cupcake that totally fits into my calories for the day.

Different strategies work at different times. Sometimes nothing works.
Last night I wanted Red Vines for about 60 minutes, then forgot about them because they weren't in the house, it was dark and rainy, and I was in my PJs.
Not having it in the house is my main strategy, I guess.
Sometimes I wait until I'm with friends at a restaurant, so I can get two bites of something--they'll finish it for me.
Or I eat two bites, then dump something inedible on top of the rest.
At my weekly knitting circle, we always have something on the table, usually cookies. That's my one night to indulge without guilt. Having people around who know my situation keeps me from eating more than the equivalent of one medium cookie total.
What doesn't work is requiring that I be perfect all the time.

That's often what I do - think about what's left in the day, and is it worth it to eat the cupcake now and skip something else later? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. And sometimes I do both, either because both may fit in, or because being a few hundred cals over every once in awhile ain't gonna hurt me.
