eating at a local restaurant

How do you account for food that you eat at a restaurant that isn't a chain? There usually isn't nutrition information on line so I'm never quite sure. How do you do it?

I am curious about this myself! I rarely eat at chains, so a lot of my restaurant meals I'm just trying to select from what looks closest of the available food in the database, which I'm sure isn't every accurate.

I use the SWAG method - Scientific Wild-*kitten* Guessing. My boss used to say that when he wasn't sure what to order for a big holiday weekend. Worked well for him, and it's how I log local restaurant food when we dine out - find what seems to be the closest match in the database, log it, and make a note at the bottom of the page that it was guesswork in case I wonder later why it looks like I ate my salad at one restaurant, and a main course from another, and so on. Works for me!

You eyeball it, ask for dressing on the side, go for grilled food etc.

I use a comparable item from a national chain. Yesterday I had some Mel's Potatoes from a corner diner near my house. I logged it as Bob Evans breakfast skillet. Most of the same ingredients. I do the same with the local pizza shop, logging it as if from Pizza Hut or Papa Johns.

Who knew what I was doing had a name--the SWAG Method?! I love it. Yeah, all you can do is find something in the database you think might be comparable and hope for the best. This had me sort of paralyzed at the beginning of my weight loss and left me not really willing to eat at restaurants much. However, now that I realize that my guesses aren't that bad (or that even not logging for a night does not throw me off track) I have become more comfortable with it. Plus, I need a night off from cooking every once in a while...
