Accounting for barf calories

No, this is not a troll thread.

I hate asking questions, but this one I kinda feel I need to, since I haven't found a decent answer by Googling.

How does one account for calories lost when sick? I've just been violently ill, on account of food poisoning or glutening - not sure - and I'm not sure if it's wise to try and make up for them all now. I feel a lot better, but not 100% sure if it ill stay down.

It was eaten about 30mins-1hour before I was ill, and there was quite a lot. Roughly 1006kcal of food and most of my protein/fat intake. And bloody hell, did I make a mess of the bathroom. Aim is 2650kcal.

So, basically, anyone got any advice on what to do?

    Well, I would imagine calorie absorbtion depends on a lot of factors, but I wouldn't worry about trying to make up for what was lost, especially if you still aren't feeling well. Have a nice cheat meal sometime later this week and call it even. :drinker:

    Seriously? One day of your calorie intake being high or low will not be the end of the world. Just carry on and eat as you feel like it.

    This happened to me a while ago. I ate some bad fish! I still counted the calories, but to be honest, I didn't really feel like eating the rest of the day anyways because I felt so terrible. It really is up to how you feel, but I'd just focus on getting better rather than on the calories. Just make sure to rest and give yourself enough time to recover. Feel better!

    If you are worried about the calories from throwing up and being sick, you may want to re-evaluate some things.

    Yup. If you are sick enough to be vomiting you need to go into a whole different mode. Your diet needs to be what is best to get you past the illness. If it's soup, crackers and juice then you take them in as you can tolerate.

    Okay but what if I just eat too much and decide to throw it up? I'm sure SOME of the calories will count, but how many?

    get better...eat food...move on.

    if you cant help but obsess over this "issue", then like others have said, please seek therapy.

    in the grand scheme of things, one puke sesh aint gonna have much impact.

    Don't worry about logging calories in or out until you're feeling better. There are better things in life to obsess over.

    Well let's see. You could throw up in a bowl so you can measure it and then subtract it from your last meal.

    Get better. Don't worry about calories while sick. Stressing about trivial things like this can only potentially lengthen the time it will take you to get better.

    You WILL get troll answers in this thread, because that's just the way it is. Expect it. Move on. Get better, and if you're seriously worried about stuff like this, you may want to talk to someone about it...indicative of a deeper issue than just watching your calories.

    1. weigh your vomit
    2. evaluate the content of the vomit to see what foods i contains
    3. on a pecentage basis log on paper the food....i.e....38% hot dogs 44% beans 18% stomach bile
    4. count stomach bile as 0 calories and total the rest of the food contained in the vomit
    5. Log exercize that will be the exact number of calories as you have thrown up
    and most importantly
    6. Realize the absurdity of 1-5, don't worry about it, and hopefully you will feel better soon

    And in an attempt to jack this thread.... What do you mean, DECIDE to throw up? Can we take an informal poll.... how many people would rather throw up, if they think it will make them feel better, and how many people ( such as myself ) will do ANYTHING not to throw up.

    Well, if you're sick to your stomach (and it's not the result of something like chemotherapy) you really shouldn't eat anything more for a few hours. Then you should probably follow the BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) diet for at least a day, probably two. A small amount (two or three ounces) of sugared soda, preferably with caffeine, will help you feel better.

    As for food logging-log or don't the food you ate shortly before you were ill--it really doesn't matter at this point.

    That's called bulimia, and we don't advocate that here.
