15k relay race

OK. So my kid's school needs a fundraiser. I'm not doing a 5k because, honestly, I don't usually run 5k. The only time I've run 3 miles lately was when my meniscus was swollen and I was wearing a brace. Last year I did enter a couple to run with my son where we ran together (he slows down, I speed up - I can only keep 7min30sec pace 3 miles) but it's not the norm.

I want it to be fun. So, I'm looking for ideas and what you would want or expect or just would think would be neato. Teams will be 1 for people like me or 3 for the 5k runners. I think a tech shirt would be nice. Trophies for winners in 1 and 3 categories and the age categories, family team categories, that kind of thing. Do I need medals for the folks who run the 15k by themselves do you think? I don't care about that kind of thing, I throw that stuff in the closet and never pull it out again, but I know there are people who like them (I keep a scrapbook of bibs with date/local/time instead).

More thought: I'm paring up with one of my fav social charities and am bouncing the idea of offering free admission to some local high school kids who maybe can't afford to do the race Anyone ever done that or heard of it done? It's not really a sponsorship since it's just the one race. If you've done a race and offered it, how'd you do it? Did you just call high schools XC coaches or something? Do you think it's even a good idea?

Are there any "runner boards" or mags which I can post or inform?

Lastly, anyone got a race checklist or a link to a race checklist? Would love to have one.

Let me reiterate, I want this to be fun. I'm looking for the sponsors to really be the money makers and the participants to have an awesome time in "runner fellowship" if there is such a thing especially since the reality is I could solicit money through bucket drops and car washes and after 4 or 5 make the same money I'll make with less effort on my end. But I run LD. The kids run LD. This is the one thing I feel like I can really get excited about.

Thanks to anyone who replies and I hope this is in the right area .
