Signed up for Half marathon!!!!

Wow! I'm excited, nervous and scared! By I just paid the $$$(yes, it was a spendy race!) for myself and my oldest son to run a half marathon next June. Can't believe I'm really going to do this! So far, the farthest I've run is 3 miles. So it'll take some building up to. I have time though, so that's good. Thanks to myfitnesspal, I'm down 57 lbs, with about 10 more to go, and feeling great! He has been bugging me all summer to run a race with him. Why didn't I pick a 5k? Lol. Yellowstone half marathon, here I come!!!!

Congrats!! A Half is a great distance to race, I have done 2! I started training in January for my first half in April and peaked too early, I was worried about covering the distance. So be sure not to start training too early! Increase your mileage slowly, include hills and interval training and most importantly have fun!! Take break when your body tells you!!! Have fun!!

Congrats!! The first race I ever did was a half marathon too - skipped the whole 5K and 10K race thing, which maybe wasn't wise. I think I just needed the motivation of a longer race in order to stick with it. I'm not sure you can be over trained - the more pounding your body is used to, the better! I did my second half marathon 8 weeks after my first and felt WAY better with the extra training for the second.

I just decided to do another half, but it's been a whole year since I did any running, so I printed out training plans for 5K, 10K and the half, and the ones I have fit together nicely if I do one after the other - they'll get me trained for the half I want to do in April if I start now.

Have fun!! And just remember - it doesn't matter how slow you go. It'll still be an amazing experience.

Thanks guys! I'm planning on doing run-walk-run. My plan is to slowly increase mileage every other week or so, only by a mile at a time, with a few times i drop back down to a lower long run. I'm thinking I'll do 2 short runs, and 1 long run, every other week, then the next week- 3 short runs. Does that sound about right?

Great fitness goal. You'll have a blast with this. Sounds like you're doing good on planning. You've given yourself a good amount of time to prepare and you're wise to not step up the mileage too quickly. It's really important to build a good base and get in lots of easy miles for practice. Once you're getting closer to the race you can try out an actual training plan like this one.

Follow one or read one and use it as a general guideline on what to do and when to take it easy and relax. Good luck

I wish I could do the Yellowstone half...I tried to win an entry but I can't really take the days off (right at the end of the school year) so I can't justify paying for it.

I have done two halves (trained up a few other times but life kept me from the starting line). I like Hal Higdron and have my husband using the novice plan right now. But since you have time I really recommend the Train Like a Mother books and their plans. If I were you I would do the 10K finish it plan and then roll right into the half marathon finish it plan.

Following a plan keeps you from building too fast but also keeps you on track for the proper mileage and base building.

Congrats! You have plenty of time. Mine is October 20th and I am not ready. Did a practice 13.1 on treadmill Sunday and got 2:29:40. But it's in Denver and going to be about 40 degrees at start time with elevation gain. So I figure 3hrs. Good luck.
