Run stretching

I haven't been doing any stretching before my runs. Back when I used to be in Karate, running is what we did to warm up before our stretches, so I was a bit pre-conditioned against stretching to run when I started C25k - so of course, I ended up pulling one of my muscles about week 6 or 7 and when I started running once that healed up, I keep getting soreness and pain that I've just finally figured out was all due to not stretching before my long runs (seems so obvious now, duh!).

So, I know that I'm supposed to warm up before stretching, but what kind of warm up to do before running? I've tried just walking around a bit, then stretching, but my muscles still felt very cold. It would seem a bit odd to go run around the block, go back into the house, stretch, then go back out and do my run (no way would I stretch outside, the mosquitoes are insane!). Any other ideas? Should I just do a few minutes on the elliptical or stationary bike first?

I do a few lower body stretches and then a fast paced 5 minute warm up walk and then run.

I'm by no means a runner, but I've started C25K as well, and I've found that trying not to rush the stretching has been really helpful. I find that if I can get out of the "Well, I touched my toes, now what?" mind set and really hold the stretch and gently loosen up the muscle, it really helps. I usually do a short walk (to my gym), then stretch and do a brisk 5 minute warm up walk. I also stretch at the end when your muscles are already warm in order to increase overall flexibility. I've felt a BIG difference when I don't do it!

    Good luck!!

In every sport I've ever done I've never had to do a pre-walk/run before stretching (this is not to say doing that is wrong). I've always stretched cold. After stretching I warm-up walk for about 4-5 min. before I start running. I make sure to stretch after running too. This has always worked for me.
