Re-building Muscle...

Hi there, I have a question for all of you. Four years ago I was a dedicated runner and loved to lift as well! I had developed some nice tone in my arms and legs..that is until I got sick. Since then I really haven't done much for exercise but would love to get back into it. Because I have had the muscle built before how does that translate in to lifting again...once you stop yes you lose your firmness but is it still there and just needs to be worked again...or does it fade away and needs to be built again? Kind of a crazy question I'm sure but just curious! Thanks so much

Muscle is always firm. If your arms & legs aren't firm, that's the fat layer covering the muscle. As you lose that fat (through diet & exercise) the firm muscle under the fat will show through. It's kind of like cleaning a window lets you see through it better.
The muscle layer may get slightly bigger from lifting, but most of the "toned" look is about shrinking the fat layer.
