Stair climber tips anyone?

Hey everyone. I searched through old posts on here but I couldn't find anything that addressed this (hopefully that doesn't mean this is just a dumb question lol)
When you use a stair climber (not the one that actually looks like a set of stairs but the one with the 2 pedals) should your focus be on pushing down on the step or lifting your foot to get to the top. I realized the other day when I was working out that I tend to focus on pushing the steps down - which is something a person wouldn't normally do when climbing actual stairs.
Anyways, I'm just wondering if by doing that I'm working out different muscles or benefiting less of the workout?
