Work out at home?

I find myself very busy and can't work out everyday at the gym. I was wondering what your guys favorite work outs to do at home are?

Thanks!

Its cheaper to buy your own gym than to join one if you have the room!

So many people buy good equipment with the best intentions and then never use it, so it ends up in the free ads or on EBAY for a fraction of the cost unused.

I do body weight exercises- push-ups against the wall or a table, lunges, crunches, triceps exercises with little 3-pound hand weights. (If you don't have weights, try 1 pound (16 oz) cans from your pantry!) Bodybuilding.com actually has a lot of good, well-explained exercises for beginners.

ZWOW (check on YouTube for her free workouts) and Bodyrock (also on YouTube, or FB). You barely need any equipment for the ZWOW workouts--maybe some 5, 8, and a 20# dumbbell) but they are great. I used to spend much more time in the gym, but got in even better shape doing these sort of short-but-intense workouts...AT HOME! :)
    Good luck.

My wife and I were paying around 100 bucks/month total. So 1200 a year. I bought a rack/bench combo for 800. Spent 400 on weights. A few little things here and there and BAM, my own gym.

I am a big fan of youtube. There a ton of full length work out videos on there for free. I use this when I can't get to the gym.

I only workout out at home and I love it. I am doing Jillian Michaels 30 day shred and her kick boxing workout. Have to say I find her really motivating!

    Use some resistance bands.
    Buy a kettlebell
    Grab a fitness ball
Do some pushups, planks & squats
    Go walking
    Go running
    Use the playground

OK...I have to throw this out there cause I'm proud of my "frugalness": My husband and I bought a rack/bench set with 400 lbs of weight, an Olympic bar and dumbbells WITH delivery for $120. The guy was a military man and was just needing to get rid of it. Granted we prefer metal weights to the big, bulky plastic ones that we have, it was still a steal. Thank you Craigslist!! :flowerforyou: :drinker:

To answer the OP's question, we lift at home. I also have 30DS, play a dancing game with my kids on the Wii and run right in front of our townhome. I like the running option because I can run without my dog on the leash and don't have to worry about other cars since we live in a gated community. Our dog can also go home when he's tired of running since he is prone to acting like he's tired or has to use the bathroom every .10 mile.

Edited because I didn't answer the OP's question.

Check out Fitnessblender.com. They have a ton of free workouts, many that don't require any equipment.
  • I use Beachbody workouts, they have a wide variety of programs for different tastes and you don't need a lot of equipments to do them at home.

My 2 favorite : Body Beast and P90x. You should check out Turbofire and Chalean Extreme, they are great program too.

I love TurboFire and TurboJam. I've also done HipHop Abs and Rockin Body. I've actually been doing Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds, I burn just as many calories doing that as I did with TurboFire!

For me it was about finding something I liked.

Netflix (by mail) has hundreds of workout DVDs ...I could test drive a new one every week. Now I have a good size DVD library: cardio, weights, pilates, body weight, and yoga.

collagevideo.com is really helpfull to narrow choices: they have video clips, professional & amatuer reviews. Equipment requirements are listed, choreography level, impact level .....makes it hard to screw up & get the wrong DVD.

    Favorite instructors:
    Kelly Coffey Meyer
    Leslie Sansone
    Chris Freytag
    Jessica Smith

If you can at all, get real weights at home.

Because I've been contracting a bit and living from a motorhome, I've got myself a set of resistance tubes. Seem to be good so far, but want to make a better device to hold/use them with.
Take up very little space and more importantly, for me, very little weight - while still offering a lot of resistance, of course.
  • My hubby and I both workout at home as well. I have a barbell set, dumbells ranging from 1-20lbs, resistance bands, and workout DVDS. The only reason to go to a gym would be to use their cardio equipment which we don't have, but we do okay with the DVDs and walking/running outdoors.

I work out at home. Weight training. My equipment includes -

    - Valor squat stands
    - Safety stands
    - Bench
    - Standard barbell (7' long, 1" dia, polished chrome finish)
    - Assorted weight plates
    - Two dumbbell shafts
    - A "door gym"
    - A few ankle weights

I used to work out at a gym. I like working out at home a *whole* lot more! :-)

Stairs... I run up and down them, get's my heart rate pumpin!
  • I have a ton of fitness programs for my Wii that are great--esp when it is 90F and 100% non-condensing humidity outside. I also have a park across the street when the weather is nice.

At work, I build in time to spend extra time on the stairs. It only takes a few minutes (less than the breaks I never get around to taking) but it makes a big difference--and as a bonus actually makes me more productive at work because I am more energized and have those few minutes every so often to organize my thoughts without interruption.

I do everything at home. In fact recently, my husband commented on how it amazes him I could get in just as good a shape as he's in WITHOUT the meal replacement programs, gym memberships, & trainer he uses. Some people do better having that appointment w/a trainer, or a gym membership they don't want to waste, or getting a kick start w/meal replacement shakes, but if you're self disciplined (and I'll admit I have my good & bad streaks w/discipline) you don't need any of it. I do have a treadmill & stationary bike I use at home (but you could run/bike outside). I try to do 30 min of hard cardio, then 30 min easier cardio, alternating days w/bike & treadmill. Then I do 45 min to 3 hrs of either martial arts, weights(alternating days w/upper & lower body workouts), or DVDs. I have nesting weights (and elastic bands), which only take up as much space as 2 dumbbells. You adjust how much weight you want & when you pick it up, only some of the weights come up w/it. The starter nesting set of the Power Blocks I use can go from 3 lbs to 15 lbs, in 3 lb increments. My husband bought a pull up bar that goes on the door, but I haven't used it yet. These things may seem a little pricey, but as other posters have said, much cheaper than a gym membership.

But my biggest thing is I've never liked the time it takes to work out, only do it for the results. If I work out at home, that eliminates driving time, & means I'm more likely to have the time to do it. I record TV shows that I like in the evening, then I watch them while I'm working out (unless I'm doing a DVD) in the morning, to help the time pass faster. But everyone is different & different things work for different people.

I use Fitness Blender website....its online and its free. I put workouts together for different days of the week to get the same amount of total calorie burn but some days are just cardio, other days focus on toning different parts. Most of their routines don't require any equipment (and if equipment is required it is only dumbbells or fitness mats, etc. -- nothing big)

I do all my strength training at home, body weight moves. I have added a little bit of equipment because I've advanced pretty far, but it's still pretty minimal. Pull up tower, rings, and parallettes. The tower I bought many years ago, the parallettes are home made and the rings were a recent addition.
