-50 lbs and now hair loss

My SW was 258 and my CW is 208, and this has been since April. I eat anywhere from 1200 to 1500 cals/day. I go to the gym 4 days/week, my workouts consist of 60-90 minutes of cardio and weights. And now... I'm losing hair. I'm only 18. I don't get it. I average 60+ grams of protein a day. Is this a normal side effect? Is there anything I can do to help it?

Are you eating 1200-1500 total, or net? (are you eating back exercise calories?) if you are eating 1200 and not eating back exercise calories, you are losing your hair because you aren't getting proper nutrition. When people want to know why it's so Important to NET at least 1200...this is why.

My sister had gastric surgery and lost a significant amount of weight quickly. She lost a LOT of hair. It took about a year, but it started growing back. She's two years out and it's getting back to normal. It will come back : )

Do you have a reasonably accurate estimate of how many calories you are burning from exercise? Your net calorie intake minus exercise should be no less than 1200 when following MFP's plan. In regards to protein intake, you may want to consider consuming between 0.8 to 1.0g x lean body mass or close to it.
  • If your worried get it checked by a dr. Could be anything causing it.
  • Sounds like you are not eating enough for your body to take care of it's self. There is a lot of talk of eating TDEE, you might want to search for it in the forums and get a better idea. Also use the tools here to find what your BMR is and eat around that instead of the 1200-1500 to see if things get any better.

Hope they do and good luck!:drinker:

Hair loss can be caused by a few different things, one of them is fast weight loss. Another is PCOS.

    See a doctor.

Yes, there are lots of things that can cause hair loss and it's easy to make an incorrect correlation. You should think about the questions asked in this thread and listen to the advice. And also go see your doctor and run it by her/him. Your doctor can help you determine what is causing the hair loss. It's not a normal part of the process.

I once experienced some significant hair loss from stress, but the hair loss stopped after two months and my hair grew back in right away. I increased my iron under doctor supervision just to be on the safe side and she also recommended I take a multivitamin with B vitamins (I was not taking any vitamins because I didn't think I needed it).

I also eat .8 grams of protein per pound of lbm.

3 years ago I lost all my hair. No sudden change in diet no new exercise routine no quick answer. Turned out i was anemic in a big way. Stress also played a big part in it. They diagnosed it as alopacia. An autoimmune disorder. (I was one of the lucky ones and my hair has all grown back.)
So if your hair loss progresses seek medical attention. There are many things that can cause hair loss.
Try not to worry too much in the meantime as hormonal changes me be playing a part in this. Your young and making changes that will take your body a little time to adjust to. ~Be sure you are getting enough iron in your diet.
Continue to make positive changes in your lifestyle.(note~ I eat 120 or so grams of protein every day and it is having no adverse effect on my hair. )

    best of luck

I'm losing some hair too... My hairdresser even commented on it the other day when washing my hair... I have been wondering if I have PCOS... I know I did have a cyst on my ovary & I'm having a hard time losing my belly... Gonna mention it 2 my Dr but also I did lose weight pretty fast in the 1st month, b4 I found MFP & found out how unhealthy it was... So, it could be that... My husband loses hair when his bone marrow malfunctions & causes him to lose all his WBC's... So, it could be anything... U should see ur Dr... It's the only way 2 know...
