Weight shopping for beginners?

I would really like to start more strength training, specifically weight lifting. I like the idea of being able to lift at home when I don't have quite enough time (or bravery) to drive to the gym and back. I use the rec center at school because it's free, but it's also on the other side of town from where I live. Anyways...back to the point. There are some little plastic weights at my house but the heaviest ones are only 5 pounds and I am curious what tips/advice you guys might have for purchasing a new set of weights. I briefly looked at some on Amazon on the other day but I know nothing. What brands are good? Materials? What should one expect to pay? What sizes/weights would you start with? What else am I missing?

I'm following this as I am also interested. I would love to be able to find some used equipment since I don't have a lot to spend.

I would think at first a bar (people seem to recommend the Olympic bars, 45 pounds), some weights (I have no idea how many, but maybe different sizes so you can increase by small amounts like the SL 5x5), a bench, and maybe one of those racks (I can't remember what they are called). I'm obviously not a lot of help, lol. But like you I would love to know what to look for.
