Getting started running with asthma

Hi all! I really want to be a runner (jogger?). Any tips from others with asthma on how to get started? Yesterday morning I jogged several short spurts during my 3.5 mile walk, and with my inhaler I did okay, finishing around 8am. However, about 2 hours after I finished, my lungs were very rattly and I coughed the rest of the day, with my lungs finally settling down around 6pm. Looking for others that experienced this getting started and looking for tips or support. Does that go away as you build up endurance, or is it always going to be an issue? I can deal for a while I think but hate to have to choose between running or not coughing all day.

My asthma was pretty good when I started running so I was able to just slowly increase my distances without issues. If you are only an albuterol inhaler and find yourself needing the inhaler regularly when exercising I would recommend speaking with your doctor (or, better, a specialist) about longer-term, preventative options. My daughter has asthma, but takes Flovent daily and has no issues with running (rarely needing her rescue inhaler). I won't speculate on what may or may not work for you, but hopefully you will find something that does help.0

Thanks for your reply. I think I will be okay if I just slowly increase. I do use flovent 2x/day and aside from exercising I'm fine most days.0
