HRM questions

I've been doing a lot of reading on the forums here and having a HRM seems like the way to go. I always question amount of calories I've burnt from what the machine says and would like more of a definite answer.

So what is a good HRM to purchase? I live in Canada, so I don't know if this makes a difference or not.. but do they sell them in regular stores like Wal-mart, or do you have to order them specially online? Also, how much does one typically cost?

Thanks!

I would get a Polar one with a chest strap, I have a FT7, and it runs around 100 bucks and you can wear it in water

I have the Polar F6 and you can buy it online or in the store at ****s Sporting Goods. Not sure if you have those there or not. Mine was $106.

Polar seems like the more popular brand then?

Is it uncomfortable to wear the chest strap while working out?

I agree with the others - I love my Polar HRM. I've had it for over 3 years and it's wonderful. I wear it for every activity that I do and I like that it's water proof.

I'm in Canada too and I just bought a fancy-shmancy HRM (Polar F11) at Fitness Depot for $145 including tax (they gave me a bit of a discount). But if it's your first HRM, Walmart sells decent ones, that's where I got my first one, the Sportline for women (i can't see a model #, but it's baby blue), I think I spent around $30, but for the stage I'm at now, I wanted one with a chest strap so I didn't have to stop while exercising to press a button to get my heart rate. It brings my heart rate down too much, my recovery is a lot faster than it used to be!

If you want just an entry level one, definitely go to Walmart, or if you just want to buy one heart rate monitor that does it all, I would look at getting a Polar (ask the clerks in the store their opinions what model to get and what your budget is, they're pretty honest, if you tell them what your fitness level is and what your goals are).

Walmart sells HRMs, but didn't find Polar there.

Canadian tire and Running Room are where I bought my Polar F6 and F4 for me and my wife.
    Roughtly between $130-$150.

Might be able to get it cheaper online or some other stores.

Canadian Tire! A store I know! haha

Yeah, I don't mind spending the extra money for a good HRM.. I don't want to get a cheap one and then sigh when it doesn't do all that much. I think it would be worth the splurge to get a good one.
