Can anyone help. I'm 5 days post operative, had my knee cap drilled. Not allowed to weight bear for 5 weeks Arrrhhhhh...I know I've got to reduce my food intake due to being immobile, but my muscles are starting to ache and give me pain, the ones I'm not using. Using a zimmer frame at present, and hopping all my weight on one leg. My arms are taking most of the weight. So my hands are hurting, and the tops of my arms and chest muscles. Never felt so out of condition and I walk normally 6 miles a day. My right buttock feels its gone to sleep and aches. Feel so down about it all, I just want to get back to normal.

Time for weight training, perhaps? There is a lot you could do and then you'll catch that weaker leg up later.

A couple of years ago I was on crutches for a month (stress fracture - left knee). Although I could not do any cardio during that time, I still went to the gym and lifted weights (no leg workouts, obviously). It was very mentally uplifting because it felt great to workout (of course), and also because of the encouraging comments I received from others at the gym.

    Hope you recover soon!

I was off my leg for under a week and it drove me crazy! I don't have exercise advice for you but I'll say this...be kind to yourself. You're probably going to end up behind where you started before the operation, and that's going to be frustrating but do not let that make you feel defeated, it's out of your control. You are also going to probably feel crappy emotionally because intense activity releases endorphins and provides so many mental benefits, and when we take that away, it is quite literally depressing. I broke down in tears the other day for no good reason, then realized it was directly tied to my lack of activity. Realizing why I felt so bad, that it was a result of reduced activity made me feel a little better...I knew it wasn't just me. So, just be gentle to yourself. Not just physically, but emotionally too.

Has your doctor given you the go-ahead for exercise? If so, ask about swimming! Weight training would definitely be another choice. That being said - when I had a tonsillectomy (not the same as a knee surgery, I know!) I couldn't work out for 3-4 weeks, whatsoever. Overexertion could cause the throat wound to open up and cause bleeding, which Is an emergency. So for that month or so, I focused solely on diet. I was scared I would lose weight, then gain it back and more. I managed to maintain my weight.

ETA: Are you doing physical therapy? A physical therapist could also give you exercises that are safe.

I've not to weight bear for 5 weeks, so the new cartilage forms if I walk on it, all the operation would be for nothing and ruined. I'm due to see the physio in 3 weeks time. I'm trying to stay focused on my diet at present, and to do some stomach crunches, and arm and chest movements. I've noticed when i get worn out hopping around (and my heart beat gets up), the pain in my knee reduces.
