A rectangle is a "tiny hour glass", you realize that right? If you're 39-30-39 you're an hourglass and if you're 38-30-38 you're a rectangle, simply because the difference is less than 9 inches. If you're 39-30-42 you're a pear, because the hip difference is more than 2 inches larger than the bust. If you're 42-30-39 you're an inverted triangle. The difference in measurements from shape to shape is fairly minimal.

None of the shapes mean "you have no waist definition" and most certainly being a rectangle/banana doesn't mean that. It is literally being a smaller hourglass in a lot of cases.

At 31-23-33 a person is technically a pear (wider hips, bust not 9 inches bigger than waist).

I thought a tiny or neat hourglass meant something along the lines of 32-22-32. A ten plus difference in bust and hips from waist, but a very slim and small person.

Out of curiosity, why does this matter?

It doesn't. It's meaningless nonsense. The "shapes" tell us nothing about body composition (or what clothing looks good), and mean very different things to different people.

I understand. I'm similarly shaped. My shoulders are the same as my hips/booty. My waist is 22 inches. And my booty is 12 inches bigger than my waist (a couple inches bigger than my bust). But, I am overall a very small person. I'm curvy, but proportionate and with a good body composition (lowish bf). I don't care to classify myself, though (and wouldn't ask others to).

    OMG

You asked the question - some people even answered and you are arguing with them?

Here - this is clearly the answer you actually want.

YES, she is an hourglass a slightly smaller one - but an hourglass. Have some glitter and rainbows :flowerforyou:

Not arguing sorry if that's what you want. However, I only explained the conclusion my mom came to after examining the 12 body shapes. Thanks for your answer anyhow.

Yeah my mom's similar she didn't care either I just was tired of her self identification being a rectangle when she saw Cameron diaz she realized she couldn't be that and she was an hourglass. I guess I like having an answer for everything

Well, there is no way I am a rectangle (even though that is a lovely shape, it's just not mine). It's just my opinion, but my opinion would be that she is hourglass (but different people are going to have a different opinion on this). As you can see from this thread, it's all just opinions. There is nothing scientific to this shape theory.

I'm wondering what of you have narrow hips and a big butt your measurements are 31-23-33 with 33" shoulders is it an hourglass rectangle or pear? What shape would that be considered?

These measurements would be an hourglass shape, assuming you are measuring your waist at the correct spot.

I've seen many post from women that measure just below the bust. That is not your waist. You should measure about 2 in above your hip bone, which is usually at or just above the naval for most women.

I suppose it depends on how you're thinking of tiny hourglass really.

A rectangle/banana is someone who has a bust and hips that are basically in proportion (Similiar to an hourglass) but the hips/bust are less than 9 inches larger than the waist. It's basically an hourglass shape, but less 'extreme' if you will, or 'smaller' in ratio, hence my assessment that this is a smaller/tiny hourglass.

However a smaller person with an hourglass shape (32-22-32) for example would also be a tiny hourglass, I suppose, but I would just just call them an hourglass, as there isn't really a 'size' qualifier for what makes an hourglass. You can be a tiny size 0 or a large size 12 and still be hourglass.

However a woman who has a bust that is only 8 inches larger than her waist is not an hourglass. I am exactly that shape (36-28-38) and I am a technical pear, because my bust is only 8 inches larger than my waist Vs my hips which are a 10 inch difference.

Not that it matters, because all the OP wants to hear is hourglass and any other conclusion will be dismissed/argued against. If her mother was so sure she was an hourglass I'm not sure what the point of the conversation was to begin with. And not that it matters because body shape means very little, but I do feel like if you're going to ask questions about it you should be given a proper answer.

exactly (well except for stuff around CV risk, but that's more about comparative location of fat, and not so much "shapes that a majority of contemporary westerners might agree would/would not look amazing in a pencil skirt"). the only reason to even think about peartangles or applircles is if a person wants to appear to conform to a certain ideal, which op's mom apparently does well enough, since everything looks great on her. which is great! and makes me think, why this thread?

Yeah but you're forgetting the shoulders.

We were unsure because to my mother she thought kim kardashian was an hourglass.

That's why the question was asked

Also if you do her waist to hip and shoulder to waist ratios that's much more pronounced than a bigger person.
She's 4'11" barely 93 lbs 31-23-33 with 33 shoulders. That ratio is .69 shoulder-waist-hip ratio. Very low for her size.

She used to measure below her belly button and get 25". But now she knows to go above to measure at her waistline.

Well, of course one is free to measure wherever one chooses. But if you are ever measured for a medical assessment, you will be measured at or just above the navel. This is where waist circumference is assessed for disease risk. And most online calculators used to determine shape are going to also instruct this.

Yeah when my mom saw certain individuals who would be considered rectangle shaped due to the waist and also because when she wears clothing she doesn't have an issue of waist definition. She doesn't gain weight evenly. Usually in her thighs. I figure she doesn't fit in one category perfectly. But as I said before after looking at all the pictures, Candice swanepoel's and nina dobrev's body type was the closest besides the fact that my mom's hips aren't as because her are 10" instead of 12" in he's bigger than her waist. Especially candice swanepoel. Only thing is her hip shape is different.

Yeah I know opinions are going to be different, and that's actually why I made this post to hear other opinions. Other than mine and my mother's
  • My bad my mom has 35" shoulders. So I guess she's top heavy

ETA Don't know if I said this before the woman in this topic used to be over 170 lbs. that's why I put her in this section.

I'm not aware of any body shape that requires you to measure the shoulders. It's bustline, waist and hips.

I am an hourglass, but when viewed front on, my shoulders are wider than my hips. This doesn't make me a triangle though, because my bust and hips are ~ equivalent. I just have broadish shoulders.
