Being Sick

Hello Everyone!

Warning! Although this is not an ED topic, it could be a trigger for some (bulimia). Also, slighty gross for the squeamish.


I have three questions about being sick while trying to log food. Today I had a meal that contained cashews. However, I did not know this at the time. Since I am allergic to nuts I had a bad reaction and ended up vomiting up the food. Thankfully, there was no anaphylactic shock this time (as I had in the past with walnuts).

My questions are:

1) Since I didn't actually digest the food, does it count toward my calorie totally? I logged the meal before eating it but I wonder if I should take it off now?



2) I feel like my stomach will be nauseous and upset for the rest of the day. I doubt I will reach my calorie goal and I only had about 600 calories today so far. To those who could not eat due to illness, how did this effect your diet? Will this mess up my metabolism?

3) Any other tips/advice for being sick while on a diet? I know this is not a obstacle that will make me gain weight but I thought it might be a good discussion for people trying to lose weight with a short or long term illness in terms of dieting and exercise.

    I would remove the food from your log and not worry about it, your metabolism will not be affected by one day's vomiting. Just get back to normal tomorrow x

    when i'm sick (as in vomiting) i see how i feel and eat something bland etc if i feel hungry and don't worry too much about logging that day.
    if i have a cold i switch up to maintennance to make sure i get enough nutrients etc to recover quickly.

    Don't worry too much. People love and use MFP but if you end up not being sure what the heck happened on a particular day, just move forward with the next day and realize you are a trooper for keeping up the fight for health etc.

    I would remove the item that you vomited from your calories.

    I doubt that it will greatly effect your metabolism but if you don't do well and/or feel concerned, see a competent physician is always the safe advice (hard for us to tell you what to do here since it involves your personal health and none of us have examined you and few of us are formally trained to be competent at examining you).

    As to being sick while on a diet, first and foremost, again it's important to get advice from a competent physician. But my friendly buddy advice would be to beware of dehydration, and to be aware that frequent vomiting can deplete the body of things (like for me, I get potassium deficient and I get a bit alkaline). Get better soon.

    Thanks everyone!

    I just woke up from a nap and I don't think I'll be eating much more today. I'll call my physcian in the morning if I still feel nauseous.

    I wouldn't worry about having one day off. I do endurance cycling events from time to time, and there are some days when my net calories are negative (as low as -773 one day) or barely positive. (There's only so much you can eat in a day, and if you're on your bike for 8-10 hours, you'll be drawing down stores.) I can assure you that my metabolism is still fine. As long as you're eating enough in the long term, a day or two of low calorie intake is fine.
