I lost 4.5 inches in 3 weeks!!! Yay!
My son who is a weight lifter has been training me. I work out with heavy weight 3x a week and cardio 2x a week. Two months ago I was not even working out at all. My maxes went up 20 lbs!!! I am so happy right now! :flowerforyou:

Congrats! I love to hear/read how people are finding strength training to be fun and beneficial. Take progress pictures, because sometimes the physical changes can be subtle - but they are happening. And it's great self-motivation.0

Congrats! Just out of curiosity how heavy of a weight do you lift? I was thinking of adding weight lifting to my exercise routine. But I'm unsure of how heavy I should be lifting.0

It's a progression of weights. I get my maxes and then I do 8x3 (8 reps, 3 sets) of 75% week 1, 5x3 of 85% week 2 and 3-2-1 (75%, 85%, max) week 3. The goal is to lift heavy. If you are lifting light weights for many reps you will not build strength. You should barely be able to get the last 2 reps done. And then get your maxes again in a month. And I am lifting free weights. I used to be really scared of them, but now that I use them I just don't feel machines get me anywhere. Free weights uses so many more muscles. I stick to basic squats (front and back), deadlifts, incline press, bench press, close grip bench press, curls. And then I throw in a core exercise on each of those days.
There are many articles if you google. I just really go by what my son tasks me with so I may not be describing things right here. Articles will tell you to lift as heavy as you can; to do 3 reps of around 10; and to be maxed by the time you finish.0 -

Very much a win/win!! I'm sorry I didn't start sooner and there is no doubt my son has made me more comfortable in the free weight section of the gym.
It's quite intimidating and I couldn't get out of my head that I didn't want the men to be angry with me for taking up the weights when they were there seriously to lift weights. I thought I would get the steely eyes of death if I stepped foot in there!! Everyone was reserved when I first started, but now that I go all the time and see the same people they are really nice and helpful.
After spending years at the gym cardio'ing to death and hating every minute of it...and then quitting 2 months in because I couldn't take it anymore -- I never thought I would actually look forward to getting to the gym!!
In fact, my hubby is in the military and we get our Y passes provided to us. Since the gov't shutdown there is no budget passed and our passes are no good until a new budget. I don't know what to do!!! I missed Monday workout and I am REALLY, REALLY missing it. Currently I'm back to the treadmill at home -- ugh!0 -

Hope you can get back to the gym soon! Great post! Thanks for sharing!0 -

Feel free!! I have found the guys very supportive and I think it's because they see me taking it seriously. I'm not there in full makeup or interested in chatting them up. I'm there to lift weights and I think they respect that I am trying so hard!0
