So for about two weeks out of the month I get really horrible menstrual-feeling cramps whenever I run (about 10 minutes into my run). If I don't stop, they get worse and worse and I feel like I'm going to throw up  its really bad. I've tried taking advil beforehand, but that doesn't really help. The only thing I can do is stop running as soon as I feel them start, and walk slowly for about 5 min until they go away. Then I'll be fine to finish running. I've always had this problem, and again its only for those two weeks. SO annoying and painful!

Has anyone else had this problem?

Are you sure you are not experiencing side stitches? When I first started running, I also felt sharp pains in my low abs and sides - but staying hydrated (meaning drinking beforehand - I don't like to drink too much while running - I get queasy) and doing side stretches helps. Start easy and work your way up - then you'll see your endurance increase (I would not "work through" the pain - if it hurts, stop, walk until pain is gone, and try again.)

I know its not side stiches. I used to get those too when I first started running, but I've been running for a while, and they've gone away. It feels just like really bad menstrual cramping.

that sounds kind of scary to me. if you are eating and drinking as much as you should be, and you still are getting those cramps, i would talk to a doctor about them. thats not normal!:frown:

I know this is really personal, but the only time I ever get that type of pain while running is if I need to go to the bathroom, either type. Try making yourself go 30 - 60 minutes before you run. If you can't figure out the cause, and soon, see a doctor. Severe pain can be an indicator of something else wrong.

And taking painkillers before running can shut down your liver, and make you ignore those strong warning signals your body is trying to give you. I know it's easier, I am tempted all the time, but it's not worth it.

Do you have any history of Ovarian Cysts? I recently had some of those and they can be extremely painful if agitated.

This will happen to me sometimes and its usually when I need to drink more water. Usually when I'm well hydrated I don't have these issues.

Try to get really hydrated before hand and see if that helps. If it is only during your cycle and you can directly relate it to that your body may be telling you to slow it down and warm up a little longer. I find that if I am not hydrated or I am within a day or two I need to warm up longer before starting to run.

    Disclamer

Men....... you may not want to read this...

Could be cysts. Nasty, mean lil creatures. See your doc and tell him whats going on. Here are a few key indicators
    pain during sex
abnormal (very painful) cramping during your period
    abnormal cycle

If you do have cysts, it is a quick little operation called a DNC. Not bad at all. You kinda have to push your doc to do the tests, sometimes. I'm glad I had my taken care of. No more days off from work due to my period, and no more odd cycles. I'm like a freakin' clock now.

    Good luck.
