Newbie Weight Lifting! Calling all experts!

I've seen such good stories about weight loss and lifting going hand and hand. I want to start weight lifting to help me on my journey to weight loss! The problem is, I don't know where to start. :(

I have never lifted weights in my life. Where do I start? How do I know how many sets and reps to do and which weights I need to start with? Is it okay for me to do it twice a week? Which exercises do I start with? How do I know when to take a break and for how long?

Anything will help! Please also share stories of your first time weight lifting! :)

    Have access to a gym?

New Rules of Lifting for Women.
    Stronglifts 5x5
    Starting Strength

pick a plan, read through it thoroughly, warm up, get someone to check your form (maybe a trainer?) and go with it.

I do, my school gym. It's crowded but I'm sure I can find a spot for myself.

    This...

there is a good read in this group too

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/4601-stronglifts-5x5-for-women

There is a summary and links to videos for 5x5

ETA: I am not new to lifting, but I have been on a very long hiatus...I love the feeling of being strong...and if you don't have hours to devote to exercise every week this is a good place to be.

I would agree with this. Weight training is an excellent use of your time at the gym. I have been spending at most about 3 hours a week at the gym. It feels good to get in, lift some heavy stuff, and get out.

It's worth mentioning that if you are losing weight, you should not expect to add muscle mass. You can gain lots of strength, but probably not any size unless you are in a surplus. Lifting (and decent protein) is key in preserving muscle mass while losing weight.

You'll be glad you started lifting. I love it.

I too am a fan of stronglifts. The only thing you need is a squat rack/cage which any decent gym should have and its usually not that occupied. Make sure it isn't a squat MACHINE.

If you have decided on stronglifts, make sure you thoroughly watch the videos and start the way it recommends. Don't try to skip the numbers ahead, you will thank yourself later on.

I personally advice a good trainer for a session or 2 to show you proper forms. Be aware of the bro trainers who will show you bad forms. Watch the 30 minutes squat video mehdi has on youtube, then if you decide on a trainer, ask the trainer to show you how he does his squat. If he's doing anything mehdi told you not to without proper explanation, then don't hire that trainer.
