Where are the healthy weight women in the media?

New movement labels overweight women as "real women".
So fashion models are "beauty" and obese women are "real".

There is zero representation of healthy, mid-range BMI women. They are not in either camp. They are in a no-man's land.

I'm talking about BMI 21-24. We say beauty and fitness is about health, but the most women we see represented in the media are either underweight models or obese "role-models".

Normal weight, as medically defined, does not catch up in being represented as a most desirable goal.

  • Weight is largely irrelevant since muscle mass weighs more than fat at the same volume. Lift heavy and eat more in general. Yes that applies to women, the stimulus is the same but the response is different due to different hormonal profiles between genders. No you will not get bulky. Media representation is heavily skewed.

I rarely see Obese women in media.. maybe I am watching the wrong channel but there is like 1-2 bigger women for 2 dozen average/hot women on tv... on tv shows and in media I see plenty of average females (probably with bmi in that range) so not sure what your watching... if your watching reality tv.. that is different.

They are there but no one makes a huge deal about them.

I wake up and drool over savannah Guthrie on the today's show every morning when I'm getting ready for work.

.... pretty much all women I see in movies and tv shows, news, whatever, unless they are actual models look like they are at perfectly healthy weight. There do seem to be more heavy set ladies than just Roseanne and Rosie nowadays, but definitely not a huge amount of them.

Agree with _noob_ the Fox News ladies (most of them) are pretty amazing looking physically. My local news stations in the Philadlphia area have some amazingly fit women as well. Including Cecily Tynan (Google her) who did the last race I did. She did the 10k in only a few seconds longer than it took me to do the 5k. Animal. Awesome.

I was going to put her but even she's on the low end of BMI. I found something that says she's 5'9" and 134lbs which is BMI of 19. I still think she has a perfectly healthy body fat level (but that's not what the OP asked).

Kate Winslet is 5'6.5" and supposedly 139lbs, which is BMI = 22.1.

I think you're exaggerating quite a bit. I think most actresses I see are at a healthy weight and seem "normal". There also many more overweight women being represented in a positive light in television and movies. Fashion models are not a large representation of women in the media. They are a very specific category to themselves.

I did see at fashion week a while back, one of the designers used a college dance team as his models. Most were of average weight, if not a little on the heavy side. It was nice to see.

I'm the same height as she is. I've been 145. I could believe she's 134, or was. Who knows when (or where) that site got it's stats.

This is like the WTA media guide listing Sharapova as 130 lbs.

    She's 6'2.

I wish I'd saved the exact quote, but I remember hearing something from the Olson twins where they said something along the lines of, "According to the tabloids, one of us is anorexic and the other is fat. We don't know who is who."

The same site says Christina Hendricks is 154 lbs at 5'7.5" so I'm taking everything it says with a HUGE grain of salt.

eta: still some good stats to show that the OP is being a ridiculous attention monger as usual.

She might have been around 150 in 2003 when she was in Firefly.

maybe even at the beginning of Mad Men I could believe it. I love her but I'm a little skeptical.

I remember reading somewhere to add 20lbs (give or take) to most celebrities' publicized weights in order to be accurate. seems to be more believable for her and JLaw.

Are there "real men" in media? I don't know because men don't think about stuff like that.

The thing with television/films is..... it's always viewed "in comparison" and you have a hard time translating this to real life sizes.

For example, remember the movie Legally Blonde, with Reese Witherspoon, and the woman who plays her friend at the salon? The woman in the salon looks huge.

The salon actress is supposed to be 5'10 and 165, BMI of 23.7
Reese Witherspoon is supposed to be 5'1 and not sure of her weight, I have read anywhere between 105 and 126, which puts her BMI between 19.8 and 23.8.

Ever watch the weather channel? Stephanie Abrams looks like a really big woman, especially standing next to other people on the show, but she is supposedly 5'8 and 135, which sounds pretty skinny to me.

Queen Latifah is now supposedly 5'10 and 165 after she lost weight.

Everything is skewed without scale. On camera, 5'10 and 165 looks quite large, but in person it looks like a very reasonable and healthy weight, does it not?
