Exercise routines?

Just starting to work out. Having troubles getting into the gym. 6 years ago I used to strength build in the gym and have no idea how to burn calories. Also size makes certain things difficult to do.
I understand cardio is a huge part of it but I'm not sure where to start. Thinking elliptical because it seems to work me harder than the bike or treadmill.
In getting into cardio I'm going to have some substantial difficulties such as being out of breath easy in a way that it feels someone's sitting on my chest. The other is getting the muscles back into shape so that they I'm still able to walk the next day for work.
Any starter workout plans would be appreciated.
